New Zealand has proudly announced it has stopped community transmission of the coronavirus, effectively eliminating the threat from its shores as the country's restrictions begin to ease.

With new cases of the virus having lingered in the single digits for days across the entire country, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has claimed to have "won the battle" against the virus, which is "currently" eliminated.

However, New Zealand officials have warned the country should not be complacent, and that COVID-19 restrictions put in place to protect people should be eased off, rather than completely scrapped.

They have also warned that while community transmission has effectively come to an end, it does not mean that new cases cannot pop up.

The news comes hours before New Zealand plans to move out of its toughest level of social restrictions.

From Tuesday, some non-essential business, healthcare and education activity will be able to resume. Most people will still be required to remain at home at all times and avoid all social interactions.

"We are opening up the economy, but we're not opening up people's social lives," Ms Ardern said at the daily government briefing.

New Zealand has reported fewer than 1,500 confirmed or probable cases of coronavirus and 19 deaths, and has been globally praised for its quick and effective methods of dealing with the pandemic.

Yes New Zealand may be able to completely lift restrictions soon apart from allowing people to come and go as they please.

I really respect that lady after what she did after the terrorist attacks on Muslims last year and her handling of corona. Shame most of the "leaders" of the world are not a patch on her.
