HUD: Homelessness rises in U.S., driven by California housing crisis

Homelessness in the U.S. has risen for a third consecutive year, driven by a spike in California, the Department of Housing and Urban Development said in a new report.

Homelessness increased in California by 21,306 people, or 16.4 percent, accounting for more than the entire national increase."— HUD statement
By the numbers: The annual HUD single-night survey, conducted in January and released Friday found homelessness increased to 567,715, up 2.7% on 2018.

  • Homelessness has decreased in 29 states and Washington, D.C. since 2018 and increased in 21 states.
  • The number of veterans listed as homeless dropped 2.1% and homelessness among children declined 4.8%.
  • Overall, the number of people listed as homeless has fallen nearly 11% since 2010.
Zoom in: Trump administration and Californian officials have vastly different approaches to tackling the homeless and housing affordability crises. Trump said in September he was considering a task force to address the issue in the state.

The other side: Californian lawmakers approved legislation in September to cap rent rises at 5% after inflation and expand protections to some 8 million tenants.

  • Newsom announced this month $1 billion in funding to fight homelessness, including $650 million in emergency homeless aid.
What they're saying: President Trump has been scathing in his criticism of how Californian authorities have tackled homelessness, saying the issue is "destroying" cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.

  • HUD Secretary Ben Carson continued that attack line in a statement accompanying the latest figures, saying "homelessness in California is at a crisis level and needs to be addressed by local and state leaders with crisis-like urgency."
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told AP California had "invested an unprecedented $1 billion" to assist communities in dealing with the issue. But he added, "we need the federal government to do its part."
"Federal leadership matters. Investments made during the Obama administration are proving effective and have contributed to more than a 50% drop in homelessness among veterans since 2010."— Newsom to AP
The bottom line: Per the Washington Post, California's homeless issue is related to soaring housing costs, mental health and substance abuse issues and "legal hurdles to getting people off the streets — all issues that could complicate federal officials’ ideas to stage an intervention."

All of America is rude AF.

Get the feeling you don’t know nearly enough Americans to make that claim. Quite frankly, neither do I.

I just know there are good and bad folks in every corner of the globe.

Including I’m sure, your home your country too.

.
Don’t need a survey to know New Yorkers are different to other Americans. Just listen to how New Yorkers talk and it’s obvious. New York politicians, movie stars, music stars, athletes, business people, etc are all in-your-face trash talkers. They behave and talk in a non-diplomatic, impolite way.

are notoriously short on patience for slow walkers

I've only been there a few times but my sister lived there (and at least 6 other cities). She said it is the only place in the US where you should expect people to bump into you as they are rushing down the street. Their "clear path generating radars" for sidewalk Etiquette are notoriously bad.

We’re walkin’ here!

New Yorkers are the biggest jerks in America, according to a new survey of the rudest cities in the U.S.

The Business Insider study found a whopping 34.3 percent of respondents said Big Apple inhabitants were the least friendly.

That was nearly twice as much as the next highest city, Los Angeles, which 19.7 percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed online in October and November said was home to the surliest citizens in the country.

Time-pressed Big Apple residents, who spend life jammed against nine million of their neighbors, are notoriously short on patience for slow walkers, tourists and people who wear big backpacks on the subway.

Yes we Newyorkers are rude because we have to find our way through Jay walking visitors to get to work or get home. We have a busy productive life and on one hand we can be called rude but on the other hand how about you walk into 99c store or in China town or a neighborhood Spanish restaurant where no one speaks a word of English and we still place orders eat and do transactions without any bother.
There is no other city like Newyork
Home of world trade
Home of wall street
Home of hip hop and rap
Home of innovation in all fields. Shit we have a museum of sex along many others
Home of fashion.
Free education for new Yorker
Home of Colombia
Home of Yankee
That's just a minimum
I'm from Brooklyn and I didnt even get started about Brooklyn

. . .
As a New Yorker myself I disagree with this list. San Francisco and LA are worst, New Yorkers are living fast paced life so no one got time but that isn’t rude. When 9/11 happened and Sandy storm hit the city I remember people helping out eachother. One time city lost its power and random people from the streets started guiding the traffic on road and everyone pretty much followed. So I say bullshit!

Sounds like you enjoy living at your city, good for you. Though, if I remember correctly, you were constantly posting in the forum just about 3 or 4 months ago asking for Pak to go to war. Why do you enjoy pushing a poor country (where majority of population will not get to enjoy all these things you listed above in your city if any war happens) into war while you enjoy all first world facilities that you pointed out above?

.
I once said " How you doing" to an Italian looking man in a street in Manhattan, the look I got back from the person pretty much seemed like " What the &*%# you want ?"

LOL! he probably thought you were trying to mug him! That's the difference I was talking about. Everyone says "hi / howdy" to everyone else regardless of how busy you are in the South
