What's new

New rankings of world's metro economies reflect West-to-East shift

why are you such a fool you have to start from some where you just cannt spread it equally among the whole country.

In order to industrialise you have to accumulate capital first in a few hands and in a few regions. Once you have enough money and industrialisation has reached a certain maturity, it's easier to spread the wealth without harming progress.

What is new? We all know that most of the Chinese wealth is there in their cities. I would prefer more equitable development model for India. Wealth should be shared between urban areas and rural areas equally

No offence bro, but this type of half baked socialist Gandhain view was one of the reasons our economy became close to a basket case in 1991. Urbanization is a global phenomenon, one cannot shy away from this truth. The need of the hours is more cities with more facilities that could accommodate the migrating masses. For example a lot of people from UP and Bihar work and live in Mumbai, if we can develop the cities of UP and Bihar they would no longer feel the urge to go all the way to Mumbai.

I think the most sensible way is not to build big cities where the geography is not advantageous to conduct international trade. It would be more sensible to channel and monitor the flow of migrants. Even though many of you denounce the Chinese hukou system, unfair as it is, it has been very helpful to build infrastructure and urbanise in an orlerly fashion rural poplulation. Once regions like Mumbai and other economic strong regions become highly developed, the newly accumulated money can be used to start building up other backward regions.

But first things first, make the strongest cities even stronger, give them an adequate infrastructure and link them together. That's how a trickle down effect should work.

Are you kidding? or simply are you trolling? China is more equitable than India just look at the GDP per capita, the highest extreme is found in India given that most of the financial resources are concentrated on a few handful rich-Ambani etc while the other Billions of Indians are living in abject poverty. India has more billionaires n the world top ten world super rich than China while India is four times less rich than China. Chinese farmers have a higher standard of living than Indian farmers. Conclusion China is more equitable than shameful India.

Chinese provinces account for much bigger share of China's economy than big cities, that's very different from US,UK,Japan,Korea where major cities account for a big share of a country's GDP.

I second this. Historically Chinese cities were always filled with poor famers seeking better fortunes and end up with having nothing. They became desperate and caused huge chaos. Hukou system, on one hand is not fair, on the other hand, make sure that every farmer has a land that they are not allowed to sell. So even during economic recession, those poor migration workers at least can return to their farming land. Privatization of land is also a bad thing in developing countries. Once it is started, it is very easy for farmers to lose their land to greedy capitalists and local gangs.

Two days ago I watched a great Indian movie "Peepli_Live by Aamir Khan. The movie is great, and it made me believe the Hukou system even stronger. Gradually it will fade away, as some cities like Chongqing already start to abondon it.
