Elections are near, the old government is on its way out and people are holding out hope that this next government would be better. Some are hardcore PTI fans, others are PML-N backers...each of us convinced that our opinion, our chosen leader is the answer. So I thought this might be the right time to share my thoughts and hopefully have more members contribute valuable knowledge to the following discussion.

First let me clarify that I'm not opening this thread to convince anyone to vote for a certain party or a certain person. I will keep this general and talk about the political system rather than picking sides...bcuz at the end of the day no matter our inclinations, that's all we want...a system that works. We want our government(politicians) to address the issues facing Pak like improving the economic situation, water shortage, power shortage, etc. So below are my thoughts...

1) Equal opportunity for ALL
Any person running for any position...be it nazim/MNA/MPA/etc. MUST NOT BE ALLOWED to put up banners, posters, and whatever other form of advertisement that not only pollutes/trashes the walls of buildings and streets but also creates a disparity. The rich can afford more advertisement and those not well off then have comparatively less exposure...making it unfair.

Instead I propose that the candidates should each have their own website/Facebook page/other social media platforms where they can make clear their position on various issues, their plan to tackle the issues faced by their constituents, etc. Likewise they should not be allowed to run ads on TV. This again creates a disparity between the rich and the poor in terms of exposure. Each candidate is free to make a YouTube(or some other social media platform) video/ad, which they can either embed on their website or on their Facebook page(or however else they choose to put it out there using online platforms).

This will accomplish two things...first is that it obviously eliminates the trash/unsightly post election decaying posters/banners on the streets that no one cares to clean up afterwards...secondly it gives everyone a fair chance(or at least bridges the gap enough). Any common man/woman(who meets the requirements) can challenge any other for any position without having to worry about expenses involved in advertisements for his/her campaign...since most of these social media things I mentioned above can be done for free.

2) Involving ppl with the right expertise
Some way should be introduced where expert opinion weighs in on government decision. I propose having official think tanks "advise"/"influence" government decisions.
For example an official think tank on economics(only economists who don't hold any government office can be part of it). When a government announces its budget or fiscal policies...they should analyze its consequences/impact on Pakistan/Pakistanis, list out its pros and cons, ways it can be improved, etc. and publish their results online.

This will have a few key benefits and will go a long way in keeping the public informed. The most obvious benefit would be that the public would know factual information that's not distorted by a political party. So something like the metro buses situation where some think that it was needed to improve public transportation...while others think it was a waste of money...wouldn't happen.

Similar think tanks on water management, power, city planning, farming, etc. would be really helpful to shape government policies.

At the very least if these reports(on government's decisions/its consequences/pros and cons/etc.) published by these think tanks(experts in their respective fields) fall on deaf ears and the government doesn't change its ways...then the ppl will still be better informed. They will realize the ineptitude of the politicians in power and be less likely to elect them again.

3) Mandatory before and after AUDIT
For anyone running for any government position...that person must declare ALL of his/her assets. This must be audited and made public(not details like their bank account number but more like their bank balance, land they own, etc.). After their term is up...this person must automatically be on ECL and unable to leave the country for the duration during which they are audited again. This next audit must also be made public. If there are any discrepancies then NAB must look into it...if for some reason NAB doesn't take action(bcuz of bribes and what not) then at least the public will know since the information would be made available for all to see or the Supreme Court can take notice.

Any other contributions/corrections/thoughts(...mostly wishful thinking :partay:) by other members are welcome. To any trolls who are gonna try to further their agenda of one party over another or derail the thread in some other manners...u r not welcome here.

Noted...I did not know that the number was this low despite numerous internet cafes and mobile phones being common place. Though admittedly I did grow up in Lahore and therefore my experience may have been very selective.

Any other suggestions/ways with which a common man can contest elections with an even playing field(or close to it)?

Any other thoughts in general regarding this topic?
