If I am not wrong, Ministry of Water Resourcess/Shipping Ministry has concluded a deal/ is about to, to allow SILTS being exported to Singapore at 1 taka per sq. either Metre/Foot.

Flood affected areas of Bihar would be more than happy to send their silt in BD through Ganges/Padma river. But the Farakka barrage is holding them. Due to that barrage people of Bihar are suffering from flood, BD people arent getting fair share of water and many of the islands of WB just vanished.

Every decision has positives and negatives.

They THINK are withholding water at Farakka to keep the draft workable at Haldia Port downstream.

But what it is doing is diverting all the silt from Bihar down to Haldia port. This unnatural diversion is slowing down the Hooghly so much that it is creating a siltation issue at Haldia instead of solving the draft issue.

The hydraulic experts in India did not foresee the mudslide and topsoil erosion problem upstream (in Bihar especially) that is now carrying an inordinate amount of silt downstream.
