It was not just the aerobridge. There was a ceiling collapse later in the day

"Bridge operator Mohammad Mudassir was moving the bridge back when it collapsed. He suffered injuries from the broken glass, however, the airline proceeded safely towards its destination, airport officials said.

Later in the day, a baggage handling section belonging to Gerry's dnata experienced the collapse of its ceiling, resulting in injuries to four people and damage to two computers which were rendered useless.

At least two people were injured as the ceiling of the international lounge at the Islamabad’s Benazir Bhutto airport collapsed on Tuesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority has sealed the office and the injured were taken to the CAA’s trauma center.

Earlier, a bridge operator was injured after an aerobridge for a Bahrain-bound plane collapsed just minutes it was was about to take off.

Was the airport glued together with cow dung? Its so new and its already falling apart?! I wonder who got kickbacks for this project?

It's just a jet bridge. Could have been a simple mechanical fault somewhere either during the manufacture or at some other stage. Doesn't automatically mean that there was corruption in it or that the rest of the Airport's infrastructure is pathetic as well, could've been a simple mistake or mechanical fault.

Yes, only one jet bridge fell after how much time exactly? The probability is higher that it is an anomalistic mechanical or maintenance fault. That really doesn't mean that the person responsible for passing the jet bridge should be completely thrashed, held responsible perhaps but not in need of an investigation on the person, rather an investigation on the cause of the fall so such mistakes can be avoided in future.
yea recently the ceiling collapsed also...Today its just a bridge tomorrow just a ceiling ...day after just a plane with you and your family....sinking into the runway :coffee: Just a runway ;) And day after just the whole bloody building coming smashing down...just an airport! Poeple's money is like cow dung no one needs to speak for how much is being spent and on what cheap shit?!

Bro i said maintenance or assembly issue ... it is not necesaary poor quality of material or design but poor quality of assembly and may be sometime of maintenance glitches because these type of fixtures requires periodic scheduled maintenance is defined by OEM ...

A Jet bridge =/= A runway, the ceiling, the runway, a plane. A Jet bridge is a MOBILE bridge that has a lot more than just physics to it. I am no where not claiming that it is not an issue and should be invested, I am saying that it's absurd to link a jet bridge crash with corruption or to trash people in charge, because is highly likely to be a mechanical fault considering the nature of a jet bridge (Not a stationary on the spot building, rather like a mobile bridge that can be moved and has other aspects to it).

I guess you dont understand examples...The ceiling did fall the day after...I posted the article... kindly read before you talk!

When a ceiling falls...and it did...I think corruption question is raised considering the airport is RELATIVELY new!

PLUS the NEW airport flooded...as usual the noon league can never understand the significance of a proper drainage system...their metro flooded due to faulty pumps and now their airport flooded too...Kind of a repeated pattern showing incapability to learn and grow = stunt growth of the brain or
just not interested in investing where the problem actually is!
OR money was embezzled
or earned through kickbacks of using a construction firm that would charge less/ belongs to family or friends and hence get some kickbacks instead of the people they are supposed to serve in mind!

Whichever it is ...it is basically POOR QUALITY considering how much they spent and did show-sha about it! It is dangerous to have things collapsing left and right!

Whoever was in charge didnt check the quality of product/ design/ fixing or whatnot! What are engineers for? We got tons of them in Pakistan ...if he /she was a basic earner ...he/she would have been fired or stripped off any clearance but in Pakistan you get tons of people supporting it?! Whatever the case, the matter is the airport is collapsing in less than 2 yrs of service!

Agreed there is nothing that can justify this ... in such contracts there are multiple warranty and performance clauses and the contractors should be penalized heavily ...

Newly-constructed building at IIA starts
Caving in

Cracks in cargo unit building have widened, offices to be shifted to a safer place on Monday, official says. — File photo

RAWALPINDI: After the customs cargo (airfreight unit) building at the Islamabad International Airport (IIA) started caving in, the authorities have decided to shift all staff and workers to an alternative place.

Initially, small cracks appeared on the walls along with a leakage from the drain in the office of a senior officer and other rooms but the cracks started increasing day by day. A portion of the building is now caving in.

Senior officers of the customs department brought the issue to the notice of the airport manager and the project director of the IIA intimating them that the building was no longer safe for those working there.

Cracks in cargo unit building have widened, offices to be shifted to a safer place on Monday, official says

Additional Collector Customs Nisar Ahmed told Dawn that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) would start shifting the office of the airfreight unit to another place, comprising two rooms, on Monday.

He confirmed that cracks in the building had widened and the building was caving in from one side making it no longer safe to work in.

The official said the airfreight unit office was shifted to the newly-constructed building on May 1, two days before the new airport was formally opened.

But the cracks started appearing in the walls after three months.

“After a letter was written to the CAA, the authority plastered the walls to fill the cracks but alarm bells started ringing when the building started caving in a few days ago.

How people can work under such a dangerous situation by risking their lives. It’s better to evacuate the staff.”

The customs authorities informed the CAA and the project director that the building of the airfreight unit was in an extremely shabby and dangerous condition.

The building is bearing huge cracks and the gaps in the cracks are increasing with every passing day.

They said every day new cracks were identified and the building was crumbling very quickly.

The authorities said the condition of the building had made the place very insecure to sit and work in.

Every day almost 200 to 250 people come to work in the building and the situation is affecting their performance and creating hindrance in the discharge of their duties.

They also expressed their concern and said it might be dangerous for people if precautionary measures were not taken on time.

The building is also housing a post office and the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) branch where more than 200 to 300 people either work or visit during working days. All these offices would be relocated.

A CAA spokesperson told Dawn that soon after the customs authorities complained about the cracks in the building, senior experts arrived from Karachi and inspected the building.

“The CAA has provided an alternative space to the customs staff after they complained about the cracks in the building,” the spokesperson said, adding that an investigation had also been launched to find out how the newly-constructed building developed cracks.

Hardly seven months have passed since the new IIA was constructed at a cost of over Rs105 billion. A number of incidents such as the collapse of false ceiling, choking of sewerage lines and stinking water in offices have occurred since the new airport became functional.
