on other hand we have good relationship with portugal & they didn't think twice in handing over our criminals back to us!!

Portugal not only supports India's quest for a permanent seat at the UNSC but also has shown desire to support India's strategic and security interests. It was Portugal which deported terrorist Abu Salem to India.

That said, Canada has also played a supportive role in curbing anti-India militant activity. They have deported quite a few Khalistani militants (including Parminder Singh Saini) to India.

Nevertheless, good job India. Canada is a friend but when it comes to foreign policy, self interests are paramount. The same goes for Canada -- they consider India an ally but won't support it for a permanent UNSC seat (probably because they don't want to jeopardize Pakistani support for the war in Afghanistan). Foreign policy is a tricky game and India is playing it well.

For all their talk of "backing" India at the NSG....the Canadian media should highlight the fact that the Harper government being on an American diplomatic leash ...was literally coerced into voting for Indian support because of Bush's aggressive lobbying.....

left to their own, they would have shot down any proposal for ending India's nuclear apartheid.....since our first test in the 1970's Canadian official and independent analysts and political commentators .....have always vociferously argued against the Indian Nuclear program....and how it should be brought to an end....after 1998 they were the most vocal in demanding extensive sanctions ......

our relationship with Portugal in contrast has been relatively stable after the Salazar regime.....

This is some smart international politics on India's part ....this move projects India's intentions to act based on its interests and not under obligation or in response to unwilling western collaborator nations .......A good message delivered......

Reason is simple ..Portugal does support India's bid to become permanent member of SC...whereas Canada is against general expansion(not India specific) of security council ..so where is the diplomatic gain in supporting Canada over Portugal.
