Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL) a DRDO Lab has designed and developed an improved Kanchan Armour for MBT Arjun Mk-II for enhanced protection against large caliber kinetic energy ammunition compared to Kanchan Armour used on MBT Arjun Mk-I.
The new Armour has been developed using advanced Armour materials and new designs do not increase weight compared to older Kanchan Armour . Armour modules replicating Mk-I and Mk-II designs have been fabricated and user trials have been carried out on these modules.
Kanchan modular composite Armour gives all-round protection to the tank from anti-tank ammunition. Armour is made of composite panels sandwiched between rolled homogeneous Armour (RHA), which can defeat APFDS or HEAT rounds. The turret houses lightweight compact Kanchan Armour.
During trials in 2000, the Kanchan was able to withstand a hit from a T-72 at point blank range, and was able to defeat all available HESH and Armour piercing fin stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds, which included the Israeli APFSDS rounds.
DMRL first started working on Kanchan Armour in the late 80’s and over years due to advancement of metallurgy and technology many improvements have been made leading to major composition and construction changes from original design.

With Improved Kanchan armour and ERA coupled with trophy shall provide exceptional protection to Arjun MK2. It already has a very High Muzzle velocity gun and high Acceleration and excellent shock absorbers to absorb the shocks. Over all survivabilty, Fire power and soft capability like Target acquisition and battlefield management system make this Tank a very deadly one, particllarly in desert area.

Its good that Indians and Pakistani are now Modern enough to create any weapon if funding is in. But Honestly after reading so many tank wars and recent tank actions in iraq, fata, Afghanistan, Georgia and other small conflicts. I think tanks should be no more than light armored, short barrel, 90+ km/h. The urban warfare is too tense and complex for tanks to handle. with dozens of RPG available at cheaper rates. ATGM's or Aircraft. Even americans and Europeans are focusing on now fast armoured vehicles instead of MBT now. I studied somewhere that germans and britishers are not thinking of producing any tank in future just update them and eventually retire. The sole reason behind obsoletion is Tank to Tank battles dont exist. The real purpose of tank was simply break the barriers, trenches. which even IFV or Low recoiled gun equipped IFV can do too. Just my 2 pence. Not saying Arjun is bad or Tanks are bad its just there time is not much.

where are the numbers ? Can some one quantify the extent of improvement or indians are just jumping cause an obscure number was increased in the model number ( read MK-II from MK-i ) ?

Well done, Kanchan-I was excellent and K-2 is just got better. Cool. Well done DRDO.

Indians are just jumping.

Well if the improvement was quantified and a significant one, more/less funds can be allocated to it depending on the competitive standing of your product vis-a-vi the market. Without numbers you are no where.

MBT Arjun Mark II has a total of 93 upgrades, including 13 major improvements over Mark I - had outclassed the T-90 during the trials. An improved armour is also a part of the extensive upgrades.

We are not going to allocate the money for the project, so I don't think they are bound to release the numbers for us. They have shown it to the user, thats what required. Though I think like Kanchan-I, they will release some numbers in due course. The tests just started.

They don't always give out the Nos.

No issues. But people should ask for such numbers and the senate panel or likes must be aware of it and quantify it some lucid form. Eg like how much cm thickness of a certain grade of steel can it pierce or equivalent to in toughness.

very good post but Tanks shall remain relevent in cotext of India, Pakistan for a relatively longer period of time. Their war scenario is different from us.

Indian defence development program is quite transparent and they give out data and not hide failures. However what might be considered operational secrets will not be be made public. This might be one such case.

yes indeed asian countries still producing cause there scenario is different from West. But this scenario is not effective enough. For example in Battle of Longewala - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Battle of longewala. Pakistani tanks were just sitting ducks for hawker hunters. in modern world its still same the indian superiority will wipe out many tanks even before arjun or any indian tanks get their. no doubt unlike longewala pakistan will be providing air cover but indian Size supremacy guarantees one thing that Pakistani tanks are vulnerable in desert or open ground tank to tank or tank to infantry battles.

You are right but still India and Pakistan are increasing their fleet of tank and this shows the relevance of tanks in current scenario.
