নোয়াখালীর সদর উপজেলায় স্বাধীনতার পূর্বে ফসলি জমিতে কীটনাশক ছিটানোর জন্য একটি এয়ারস্ট্রিপ ছিল। স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তী সময়ে যা যথাযথ রক্ষণাব্ক্ষেণ ও পরিচর্যার অভাবে পরিত্যক্ত রয়েছে। সেই স্থানে একটি বিমানবন্দর স্থাপনের জন্য ২০১৭ সালে ১ আগস্ট সড়ক পরিবহন ও সেতুমন্ত্রী ওবায়দুল কাদের তৎকালীন বিমানমন্ত্রী রাশেদ খান মেননকে চিঠি লেখেন। ওই চিঠিতে বলা হয়, পরিত্যক্ত স্থানটিতে একটি রানওয়েসহ ছোট টার্মিনাল রয়েছে। জনস্বার্থ বিবেচনা করে নোয়াখালী সদর উপজেলায় অব্যবহৃত এয়ারস্ট্রিপে একটি নতুন বিমানবন্দর স্থাপনের জন্য ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণের অনুরোধ জানানো হয়।
