Of course he made great contribution to Muslim thought in India (Subcontinent) but given his anti-Pakistan stance, if I were the head of the Interior Ministry I would have rejected him coming to Pakistan from Bharat. He was one of the greatest scholars we produced and had a major influence on Sunni/Shia Muslim thought in Pakistan.
We can’t divorce Islam from Pakistan, it is simply not possible.
The thing is that a lot of scholars of Deen became reactionary in their approach to everything given the British rule. It is understandable but a lot of them are still reactionary to everything...and this is not always a good method...I respect him as a scholar of Islam as a political activist and politician not so great first not supporting the Pakistan movement was an error involving the Cleric class in politics another error which lead to long term disatisfaction with Islamist politics among many folks
