Nearly a Quarter of China Could Be Forest by 2020

This was few years back, wonder how is the progress.
We have done it for decades...But we should understand it takes several thousand years to form the dry plateau in northern Shannxi, so we need more decades to restore the local ecosystem.

Building trees is one of the index in local government's yearly performance examination, and is mentioned in any annual government report.

In 2015, my province built 3.769 million Mu forests, 25.6% more than planned! That's 2512km2 new forests!

The best way to reforest China is to bring monsoon from India , Imagine if this monsoon water can reforest Taklamakan Desert, we can revive the ancient city such Loulan and make Xinjiang a paradise over again.

I think China will start reforesting desert area if not already started but will start soon. With new forest technology it's possible
My question is,USA also has a bulk of desert like the region surrounding where the Grand Canyon is located,USA's forest rate is currently at 33%,how come they haven't turned their deserts into a green region with their "most advanced technologies"? Is that practical?

is that possible? i want see Hindustan dry for Pakistan

In ancient time, Monsoon cross India and came to Western China, due to the continental tectonic plate collision and for Himalaya chain become higher and higher with time and create the barrier stopping Monson from come to China but if China clear the passage and the monsoon will come back to China again

China should direct the monsoon to Xinjiang asap

A more thorough research should be done in regards to forestry and forest cover. The beautiful old primeval forests are nearly gone and a lot of the new forest cover consists of low grade eucalypt, pine and poplar. What's really needed to be done is to grow indigenous trees native to each region and expand on the original primeval forests.

To make things worse, some opportunist and enterprising local officials are growing fruit and nut trees to make money with! If the trees are not native to the region it could cause unneccary strain on local water sources as well as ruin the ecological balance.

In Cixin Lius three body problem, the part with the military cutting down old growth forests broke my heart. To think that fresh water streams teaming with wild fish running through ancient forests being cut down and now being "rectified" by planting fast growing eucalypt is a nasty parody of the true beauty of old growth.

Technically it's not impossible but like build great wall and Great canal, you need great vision and will of the politician. It's like planting a three, don't expect an quick and immediate result you will have to wait so many years to collect the fruit of your labor.

This is great news. In my country, about 30% of all land is forest, that's about 7 people per hectare. But our neighbours, such as Switzerland, Austria, France and the Scandinavia have even more forest, if it's measured per capita.

So, there is still a lot to do in China.

My province 39% in 2014.
Zhejiang Province, China's 4th economic powerhouse, 60+%
The question is China's huge west, the national rate is useless.

Couldn't agree more, lots of "forests" I see myself in China are at best some low-grade vegetations or artificial trees planted for profits which are detrimental to the eco-system

And when I saw russia on google street map,OMG!!,you can't believe how I was shocked by how abundant their forests are! And most importantly, nearly all the forests they got are all overwhelmingly primeval forests, our similar primeval forests growing mainly in Manchuria are like littles specks compared to theirs

On google earth you can immediately notice the distinction between our Manchuria and Russia occupied outter Manchuria, the forests on our side are mostly exploited while theirs are mainly untapped

Any forest cover is better than no forest cover. Even the fast growing low grade growth is preferable to barren land.

Perhaps in the future better selection of trees should be a priority over mass planting of trees.

Here is a pic of a beautiful and ancient ginkgo. I wouldnt trade this one ancient tree for a million eucalyptus or shitty pine tree.

The environmental upgrade from low grade vagetation to high grade indigenous real forests via nature's selection takes time, what we should do is to stop expoliting our nature like crazy like we did in the past
