Nearly 2,000 migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh have been rescued or swum to shore in Malaysia and Indonesia, authorities said Monday, warning that still more desperate migrants could be in peril at sea.

The spate of arrivals comes as Thailand, their usual destination, cracks down following the discovery of mass graves that has laid bare the extent of a thriving human-smuggling ring in Southeast Asia.

Thousands of impoverished Muslim Rohingya -- a minority unwanted by Myanmar's government -- and Bangladeshis have been braving a perilous sea and land trafficking route through Thailand and into Malaysia, Indonesia and beyond every year.

Malaysian police said people-smugglers had dumped more than 1,000 hungry migrants in shallow waters off the coast of the resort island of Langkawi since Sunday.

"We think there were three boats that ferried 1,018 migrants," said Langkawi deputy police chief Jamil Ahmed.

Attacks on the religious minority by Buddhist mobs in the last three years have sparked one of the biggest exoduses of boat people since the Vietnam War, sending 100,000 people fleeing, according to Chris Lewa, director of the Arakan Project, which has monitored the movements of Rohingya for more than a decade.

Thousands more are believed to be stranded at sea.

At least they will have a more receptive country to live in --- in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Given the social instability in Burma, one cannot blame the Burmese Rohinghya running to Indonesia to seek a better life.

international pole vaulters :o:

More like persecuted minority, ergo, the Rohingya.

Indonesia can give temporaty shelter and protection for them, but this is not permanent solution. Indonesian government isn't signatory of UN's Refugee Convention. Sooner or later we have to send them back to their country of origin. Or until UNHCR can resettle them to other UN's Refugee signatory countries.

Australia would be a great place to resettle them, but it won't happen until Abbot step down from his current position.

When will Pakistan start working on sending back Illegal Bengalis and Burmese from Pakistan. I am 100% sure that when all of the AFGHANs, Burmese and Bengalis leave Pakistan, then Pak will see a drop in population from 190 Million to about 150 Million just.

We need to grow our economy more, so we can handle this regional problem much better, in the old days we even set up one island to help Vietnamese refugees, Galang island.

It would be better if the Burmese Government were to change their policies regarding the Rohingya and give them permanent resident status, with the possibility of naturalizing. Controlling sectarian violence would also be beneficial.

I see underfed, malnourished young men. This is so sad to see this.

That would be the best if Myanmar government can pull their act together and clean up this mess.

Rohingya community in Arakan is 3 million now.
There was no country like east pakistan before 1947. Chittagong and Arakan state was historically same for many times. Bangladesh and Burma was administered from Calcautta. Later East Pakistan was created for Muslims which renamed itself Bangladesh in 1971. Which comprised of East Bengal, parts of Assam and Chittagong. When the boundary was drawn by the British they left Muslim majority northern Arakan in Burma. Similar to Muslim majority other parts of Bengle remained in India. So after creation of East Pakistan rohingyas started rebellion against Burma to add Arakan with East Pakistan. Which caused them denial of citizenship later by the Burmese. With lack of health treatment they have at least 5-10 children per woman. Lack of education and denial of every facilities made them extreme. Starting from 80s they have been flooding in Bangladesh. And more people became BD citizens and 5 hundred thousands are in refugee camps. While Pakistan and Saudi Arabia also holding many. For last some years Bangladesh is denying more entry because of illegal activities by them and BD cant take so much burden. So these people are trying to escape Myanmar Arakan by boat to every direction.

Most of them don't look like Rohingyas

You dont know how the Rohingyas look like so back off

The Rohingya are a product of intermixing of ethnic burmese, bengali, arabic peoples over the centuries. So it is rarely possible to see a "pure blooded Rohingya". Rohingyas come in different sizes, colors, which only adds to their collective identity.

You are right. They are mixed people.

So thats how Rohingyas look like huh.. They look nothing like Burmese.

So what? North and South Indians look different. Kashmiris look like Arab, Shikhs look different, North Eastern Indians look like Chinese. And many people of WB, Bihar, Assam and Tripura look alike Bangladeshis. And Arakan was an independent kingdom. Its natives are Rakhines, not Burmese. And we have ethnic Rakhine population who took shelter in BD kuakata during ethnic cleansing by Burmese kings. Burma and Arakan were hostile to each other.
