Navy war-room leak: Five chargesheeted

NEW DELHI: Will more skeletons now tumble out of the defence ministry's closet? The CBI says as many as 7,000 pages of classified information were "compromised" during last year's infamous Navy war-room leak episode.
Alarmingly, the 250-page CBI chargesheet filed in court on Monday holds that the "sensitive" nature of the leaked information from the Navy war-room and the air defence directorate in Air HQ was such that it "has a direct bearing" on the country's "present and future security".
The five persons named in the chargesheet, filed under the Official Secrets Act and IPC's criminal conspiracy section, include former naval officer Ravi Shankaran, who is a nephew of Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash's wife.
While Shankaran is still on the loose somewhere in Europe, the other four accused, all in judicial custody at present, are: Lt Commander Kulbhushan Parashar, Commander Vijender Rana, Commander Vinod Kumar Jha and Wing Commander S L Surve.
While Parashar had left the Navy with Shankaran to set up a business, the other three were sacked from service after the leak was detected.
Shankaran, Parashar, Surve and Rana have been chargesheeted under both Section 3 of the OSA, which deals with the
penalties for spying, and Section 5, which relates to wrongful communication of classified information.
