For the first time in Mumbai the Tsunami Early Warning System Siren will be tested on Monday. The siren will be sounded at noon.

"The newly installed Tsunami Early Warning System Siren will be tested between 12 and 12.10pm on Monday near INS Angre off Reserve Bank of India head office in south Mumbai. The siren and a Digital Electronic Board is part of a system for issuing early warning in case of a Tsunami threat in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR)," said Commander Rahul Sinha, spokesperson of Indian Navy.

The siren has a radical range of 3 kilometre in all directions and will have a continuous hoot for one minute.

The system is installed at the Meteorology Office of the Western Naval Command by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), an autonomous organisation under Ministry of Earth and Sciences (MoES). Once this test is successful, the siren will be connected to and remotely controlled by INCOIS, Hyderabad and will operate in case of a possible tsunami threat in the local region.

"After the successful completion of drill, it is intended to carry out testing of the Tsunami Warning Siren on a regular basis between 12 and 12.10pm on second and fourth Saturdays of every month from November 1," added the spokesperson.

The idea to have the Tsunami Early Warning System Siren was conceptualised after the December 26, 2004 earthquake for which the epicentre was at Sumatra Islands in Indonesia and the resultant tsunami. The catastrophe exposed the vulnerability of the Indian coastline to oceanic hazards.

Thereafter, India started its own interim tsunami warning centre in the first quarter of 2005 to issue tsunami bulletins generated from seismic information. The interim services were succeeded by setting up of a state-of-the-art Indian Tsunami Early Warning System (ITEWS) at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, under the Earth System Sciences Organization. The system implemented in phases became a full-fledged 24x7 operational early warning system in October 2007.
