Mysuru, Dec 30: The Indian Navy on Wednesday said it achieved a significant milestone in enhancing its Anti Air Warfare capability with the maiden firing of its newly developed Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM). The firing has been jointly carried out by the Indian Navy, DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries.
Two tests were held - one last night and another today morning - both now being decaled as successful. Navy said the firing was undertaken on the Western Seaboard by INS Kolkata, with the missile intercepting an Aerial Target at extended ranges. OneIndia had reported earlier about the possible test-firing of the missile in India soon. LRSAM is manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Limited, India. [LRSAM to be test-fired in India in Oct: BDL Chief] Indian Navy says apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MFSTAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile.

The missiles are fitted onboard the Kolkata Class destroyers and would also be fitted on all future major warships of the Indian Navy. BDL CMD V Udaya Bhaskar had earlier told OneIndia that mass production of LRSAMs would begin from early next year onwards. For DRDO, the successful test-firing has come as good news before logging off from Year 2015. OneIndia News
