A huge fleet of Chinese fishing boats is approaching the Galapagos Islands, prompting a swift response from the Ecuadorian navy.
Officials said naval patrols had been stepped up as the fleet of about 260 ships neared the economic exclusion zone around the islands.
In 2017, a Chinese fishing vessel was caught with a cargo of 300 tons of marine life in the marine reserve Ecuador maintains around the Galapagos.

Defence Minister Oswaldo Jarrin said in a press conference this fishing fleet was currently still in the corridor of international waters.
Ecuador President Lenín Moreno tweeted in Spanish over the weekend to support the navy's troops.
"We will work in a regional position to defend and protect the Exclusive Economic Zone around the Galápagos Marine Reserve, one of the richest fishing areas and a hotbed of life for the entire planet," he said.
Chinese fishing fleets come to the region every year, but this one is larger than other recent flotillas and nearer to the exclusion zone.
The Galapagos Islands and the surrounding ocean are a UNESCO world heritage site and a global hub of biodiversity.
Charles Darwin famously formulated part of his Theory of Evolution on the islands, noting the differences between the sub-species on each isle.
