For facing "new developments" in the region
RAMANATHAPURAM: The Indian Navy has decided to upgrade its detachment at Rameswaram, which is very close to Sri Lanka.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, Commodore Phillip Van Haltren, Naval Officer in-charge, Tamil Nadu, said the decision was to strengthen infrastructure and augment resources for beefing up security in the region. All necessary facilities would be set up to face "new developments" in the region.
Commodore. Haltren said the detachment at Rameswaram was established to help the Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka. It was set up in a structure owned by the State Government. However, a lot of developments had taken place since then. "We are in a position to update our infrastructure according to the need of the hour. We think Rameswaram is an important region of the East Coast in terms of future perspectives.
The region will become one of the busiest sea routes once the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project is completed. Hence, we have decided to upgrade the Naval unit with a permanent building and modern facilities at Rameswaram," he said. Commodore Haltren said he had discussed the issue with Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and sought the State Government's cooperation in allotting land.
