All "Bears" are overhauled, that means no plan to retire them and they would be working along with P8I ??
Different roles ?

Yes. One could say that the Tu-142s are E-LRMR a/c with primarily ASh capability while the Il-38s and P-8Is are LRMR a/c with primarily ASW capability.

Perhaps..
Just as an Idea.. one or two of the bears could be made a dedicated comms relay aircraft for India's growing sub fleet.

AFAIK, that capability already exists along with shore based VLF comms system. The Soviets were already on to the idea when the Bear variants were operationalised.

Supposed to be so loud, the joke is that submarines can hear them:-)

Fact: the Propellers breach Mach 1 while spinning.

Fact 2: Can fly from Mumbai to South Africa and back without refueling.

Incidentally, I met one of the top Indian Navy pilots who flies this aircraft some 7 odd years ago. I was very impressed by his personality. He was a Bohra Muslim; members of this particular sub-community are known for being excellent businessmen, but not known for being interested in the armed forces. He mentioned back then that they were getting very few hours of flying time because of maintenance issues.
