What started off as a Technological demonstrator program for bigger HALE (high altitude, long endurance) UAV, which was later converted into full fledged Medium-altitude long-endurance UAV (MALE UAV) project on recommendation of Indian Army , might actually serve Indian Navy first .
Recently Rustom-1 with the new improved engine too off and completed its first flight. the more powerful engine was installed in the Rustom-1 on request of the Indian navy, which will enable it to fly in rough weather conditions over the sea.
According to report prepared by prominent journalist ” Ajay Shukla “, DRDO and Indian navy will use Naval Rustom-1 for surveillance of the maritime boundary of India and also will carry Automatic Identification System (AIS) System in its payload which is an automatic tracking system used to track and for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships.
AIS widely will be used to track and monitor activities of the Indian fishing fleet, which sometimes cross boundaries by mistake and are neither arrested or shoot at. problems of Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen in the Palk Bay seems appear everlasting. In past one decade, more than 200 Indian fishermen have been reported been killed due to operations by Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) and needs immediate attention.
Navy also plans to use Naval Rustom-1 to monitor and warn Indian fishing trawlers and boats from entering maritime boundaries of other countries and also will play a role in Maritime Security of countries Exclusive Economic Zone and help in monitoring ships which possess some level of potential threats to the country.
DRDO also has developed Armed variant of Rustom-1 which can carry Two HELINA missiles which can be used against ground targets. An armed variant of Rustom-1 recently completed its Undercarriage trails with missiles and is preparing for its first flight later this year before weapons trials can commence later planned in next year.
