Pushtuns should make peace with other ethnicity of Afghanistan (Tajiks, Uzbeks etc) because Afghanistan belongs to all the Afghans (Does not matter if they are Pushtoon or Tajiks etc).

Do you think it possible to preserve Afghanistan as a unified state? What could unite these nationality?

Reconciliation between Pushtoons and other elements is the only way. Those who are waging war just to grab control should be crushed.Reconcile with elements who are good but crush those elements who are not willing to reconcile with you.

Origin of such an aggressive ideology is based on dividing the Pashtun ethnic group by Britain. First of all it is necessary to remove the cause, then the time will change the ideology.

When you say pashtoon, i think you need to analyze which pashtoon you mean? pashtoons of pakistan think something and pashtoons of afghanistna something else. the old british have done many things against other ethnic groups as well in the region, but lets rule it out today.

I think it is impossible to stop the violence without the formation of the Pashtun state, which includes part of the territory of Pakistan and Afghanistan. But Pakistan is not likely to agree with this.

It would also be, another landlocked state and if history is any marker, they will be countless infighting and tribal warfare on a greater scale.

Neither would Afghanistan want to merge with them, they dont want another 35 million Pashtuns to disrupt their fragile social dynamics.

In the end of the day, despite all the politics, Pakistan and Afghanistan are brothers, our history has always been intertwined and the two countries are realizing that they need each other more and more despite whats often reported in the media.

Furthermore the majority of Pashtuns live in Pakistan, and are interlinked with the historic Indus river region that courses down its heart. Karachi hosts a Pashtun population of 6 million making it the largest population of Pashtuns in the world. Lahore has 1+ milliion. What would make more sense is that the Pashtun majority areas of Afghanistan merge into Pakistan or that Afghanistan as a whole join with Pakistan in a confederation(as it was as recently as the 18th century) but with a democratic parliamentary system if you really wanted to talk about regional stability. The idea again has been in the pipelines since 1950's under Zahir Shah and Liaquat Ali Khan.
(found this interesting video on youtube)

Incidently, The founder of Afghanistan (Ahmed Shah Abdali) was born in Multan, Pakistan.

Going back to the point of this forum, the northern route is unfeasible and every military planner and strategist is fully aware of this fact. Let alone the financial costs (which would increase to unimaginable levels), the logistics of travelling through so many countries and opening up of another front is futile. Even best estimates suggest this route wouldnt be able to handle the volume or even come close to that which is occuring through Pakistan currently.

Another point to ponder, Nato/US getting supplies via Russia? not thats its impossible, but im sure thats going to raise questions. besides the US army has longstanding ties and a strong relationship to Pakistan and its armed forces.

Without Pakistan's support, the whole operation in Afghanistan will fail. Thats a fact. They need Pakistan more than Pakistan needs them despite all the fanfair to the contrary.

Pakistan did not have suicide bombings and terror at this level prior to the US/Nato mission in Afghanistan. Pakistan is doing more than any other nation in this war and needs to be appreciated a lot more because of the sacrifices she and her people have made. It lost the most both in civilian casualties, troop deaths, and economically has suffered despite the petty aid it is receiving. Much of its infrastructure(roads, schools, rail link) have suffered.

Its because of Pakistan's logistal assistance that US/Nato troops are able to eat, fight and be supplied at any given time in landlocked Afghanistan. They can play this northern route card all they want, quite frankly, many Pakistani's would be quite happy if they stopped using our logistical routes, but lets get real here, there is no military operation in Afghanistan without Pakistan's backing and support...period

Another solution - to add part of Afghanistan where the dominant Pashtun population to Pakistan. But for that Pakistan should have a stronger ideology.

but will people agree in afghanistna about that? this is not a peice of cake to give to someone.

I don't think so...There are Punjabis on India and Pakistani side.Does not mean we merge both Punjab's.Same with Balochis (Both in Iran and Pakistan). The best solution would be to include Pushtoon elements in government of Afghanistan because unlike Pakistan Government in which there is huge Pushtun Influence (Both Military and Civil Side) Afghanistan does not have Pushtun influence in Government. But Pakistan should never grab land of Afghanistan as you are suggesting. Pushtuns should make peace with other ethnicity of Afghanistan (Tajiks, Uzbeks etc) because Afghanistan belongs to all the Afghans (Does not matter if they are Pushtoon or Tajiks etc).

that is not true.

because Afghanistan belongs to all the Afghans (Does not matter if they are Pushtoon or Tajiks etc

the only logical solution.

Interesting idea. But using democracy is unlikely to make it happen. On the basis of Islam, you can create an alternative ideological movement that will unite the consciousness of people. Democracy can not take root in Afghanistan - consciousness of the Afghan people are alien to the democratic values.

For an average afghan democracy means everything, other people will probably take it for granted, but people over there know the value of democracy. Despite the threats of the taliban people headed to long qeue polling stations , they all knew that the taliban could carry out attacks on the voters and polling stations, they even had their heads and fingers chopped off. i wonder if people in russia would have gone voting if there was a very real threat in front of them?

may i ask what are you refering to by this line?

thanks.

Afghan Empire of Ahmed Shah Abdali, crowned King and founding father of the nation state of Afghanistan. Incidently, Born near the city of Multan, who after securing the trans-indus regions, united all the various tribes and ethnic group to lay the foundations of Afghanistan/Pakistan.

do you think it is practical today? We have had so many of those empires in the past. The Samanis, Safaris, Ghaznavis, Tahiris etc who were permanantly controlling central asia, Khorasan(today afghanistna) and all of Iran, but we cant go back to that.

I dont see why not. In the case of Afghanistan and Pakistan, both countries seem interlinked at a local level, there is no doubt about this. The people in both countries, are bogged down in petty issues, but in due time, we will be able to see the larger picture and focus on our common goal. Furthermore, it will bring considerable regional stability to the region, the people inhabiting it and to the world overall.

For all intents and purpose, the US administration, despite Pakistan's protest and oppostion considers the area A f - P a k because they understand that things flow back and forth between the two. While I disagree on a political level that the comparison is rather erroneous in the manner in which they are using it, it does point to a commonality and integrative feature of this region. Even our border with Afghanistan is not a normal border, on a daily basis you can see thousand upon thousands of people crossing over, extended families, wedding parties, laborers, its truly a remarkable site when you see, i've personally never seen a border like that.
