The US should use more money to help Afghanistan's non-opium agriculture and less money on useless stuff.

The ISAF and the Afghan government had an agricultural programme some years ago, that was supposed to offer and encourage farmers to cultivate saffron as an alternative to heroin poppies.

But the whole thing was just a complete failure due to corruption, unrealistic promises made by the authorities (such as government fundings), the fact that the government didn't even have money to fund it in the first place, and the fact that the poppies were just so much EASIER to cultivate (Poppies are a weed and an invasive species after all!), whereas the cultivation of delicate crops like saffron were prone to crop failures in a hostile climate like Afghanistan's.

Russia will have to take a little blame for this.
According to the article after the Russians destroyed Afghanistan's agriculture all the farmers went into the Opium business to stay alive and Afghanistan became the #1 supplier. Now the GDP of the country is tied to it.
They shipped a lot of that opium to Russia and other countries and caused problems.

The US should use more money to restore their Agriculture back to where it was.

It is not that simple my Friend. You have to understand the economics of " Poppy versus Agricultural Products".

An acre of land produces 20 times more money if Poppy is grown versus Wheat, Corn, Soya beans etc.

You have to find a solution to the inequality of returns on these competing use of crops to discourage a farmer to grow Poppy.
