NATO chief assures support to Pakistan, to visit after formation of new government
WASHINGTON, March 1 (APP): NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has lauded Pakistans support for its mission in neighboring Afghanistan and said he would be traveling to the South Asian country to hold political dialogue on further bolstering peace and stability efforts in the region.
Speaking at a Washington think tank, he recognized the complexity and difficulty of the problem in the Afghan-Pakistan border region and held out NATOs commitment to assist Pakistan in overcoming challenges confronting it.
We have to do everything we can, to assist and help the Pakistanis, the chief of the 26-nation military alliance stated at Brookings Institution, arguing that instability in either country - Afghanistan and Pakistan - means instability in the other.
He said the NATO, Afghanistan and Pakistan have a serious military-to-military dialogue through the Tripartite Commission and underlined the importance of political dialogue.
As soon as there is a new government in Pakistan, I intend to travel again to Islamabad to talk to the president, to talk to the government to see how we can lift the level of our political dialogue in the interest of minimizing this cross-instability around the borderline there.
Hoop Scheferr, who was the first ever NATO Secretary General to visit Pakistan last year, acknowledged the countrys counterterrorism cooperation.
Islamabad has stepped its support for our mission and that is appreciated.
He said NATOs effort for peace and security in Afghanistan is a mission of necessity and reaffirmed commitment to efforts for its success. In his interaction, he also cited Pakistans long-term interest and concerns whether the international community will be in Afghanistan over a long-haul or abandon the country once again as it did after the Soviet withdrawal in 1989and again leave it to Islamabad to contend with militants.
