What's there not to understand, the prophet was born in c.570- and the Quran's revelations came even after that..so there's nothing there to understand..besides how can any religion exist from the beginning of time..last I checked we weren't building mosques/temples/churches in 20000BC.
Actually according to Islam Adam AS was the first Muslim since he believed in One God Allah and all his children believed the same. Prophet Muhammad PBUH never claimed he was bringing a new religion he was the corrector of the one religion that had gone astray.
Now since you do not believe in the first man Adam AS then obviously this would sound ludicrous to you but I am speaking theologically based on Islam.
That is also the reason when someone becomes Muslim we do not say convert like Christians or Jews we say revert.
When a Muslims says someone converted to Islam they are only trying not to inflame others beliefs but amongst ourselves we say revert.
