Pathan, Pakhtun, Pashtun, even Afghan can be used to refer to the Eastern Iranic people who speak Pashto and follow Pashtunwali.

I rather you not use Afghan, that has been hijacked by one country to use for their own political gains. Also the difference between, pakhtoon and Pashtun, is the difference between the dialects of pakhto. The southerners tend to soften the pronunciation, but pathan is alien to us.
