ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday announced cash reward for those who would provide information to it about electricity theft.

The decision has been taken in connection with a campaign launched by NAB and the water and power ministry to recover Rs110 billion from 300,000 defaulters across the country.

“Citizens who bring to the notice of NAB instances of theft of electricity, and/or instances of misuse of authority by officials of electricity distribution companies and the persons who are using the services illegally will be rewarded,” NAB spokesman Ramzan Sajid said.

“The informers will be rewarded from the recovered amounts in accordance with the rules,” he added.

He said the first phase of the NAB campaign against defaulters of electricity dues expired on April 4 and the names of the defaulters had been uploaded on the NAB website and also forwarded to the media.

The second phase of the Voluntary Return (VR) initiative was set to expire on April 19 and, after the expiry of the 30-day deadline, criminal proceedings would be initiated to arrest the defaulters and file reference(s) against them in the accountability courts.

“Failure to pay the monthly dues for services payment of electricity bill is a crime and the defaulters are being dealt in accordance with the law,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, NAB has directed the power distribution companies to sever electricity connections of defaulters, failing which action would also be initiated against officers/officials of such companies under the NAB Ordinance 1999. The bureau has already made names of 596 electricity defaulters public who had failed to clear their dues amounting to Rs230 million by April 4 deadline set by NAB.

However, the total number of defaulters across the country is said to be more than 150,000. Before the launch of the campaign, the total number of defaulters was about 300,000.
