KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested former project director of the Lines Area Redevelopment Project (LARP) on charges of being involved in what is called China-cutting of precious plots, said a statement issued on Thursday.
It said that Fareed Ahmed Yousufani was held for his alleged involvement in bifurcation, amalgamation and allotment of precious auction plots in LARP through China-cutting, which caused billions of rupees loss to the national exchequer.
“He [Mr Yousufani] bypassed the auction which was otherwise mandatory as per the law and allotted the land (thus cut up into small pieces and sold to fake owners) to builder and the land grabber mafia at throwaway prices in return for huge bribe and commission,” said the statement.
“The illegal activities have caused a loss in excess of Rs5 billion to the national exchequer. The funds thus generated resulted in terror financing and unregulated settlements for terrorist activities,” it said.
In June 2015, the NAB arrested five officers of LARP on charges of their alleged involvement in grabbing of land worth billions of rupees. They were director Waseem Iqbal, deputy directors Fareed Naseem, Shahid Umar and additional directors Atta Abbas and Rashid Hussain.
The NAB statement also claimed the suspects had divulged during interrogation that many former project directors, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s administrators and Karachi Development Authority officers were also involved in illegal activities. The suspects had amassed huge assets for themselves through the corrupt practices, it said.
