Myanmar may have chemical weapons stockpile: US

https://www.bssnews.net/?p=309184

THE HAGUE, Nov 26, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Myanmar is in breach of a global
convention banning chemical weapons and may have a stockpile left over from
the 1980s, the United States said on Monday.

The southeast Asian nation may still have weapons at a “historic” facility
where mustard gas was produced, a senior State Department official told the
annual meeting of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

Myanmar officially joined the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which bans
the production, storage and use of chemical arms, in 2015.

“The US has serious concerns that a chemical weapons stockpile may remain
at Myanmar’s historical chemical weapons facility,” Thomas DiNanno, Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State, told the OPCW in The Hague.

Washington had information that Myanmar “had a chemical weapons programme
in the 1980s that included a sulphur mustard development programme and
chemical weapons production facility”, he added.

“Based on available information, the United States certifies that Myanmar
is in non-compliance with the CWC, due to its failure to declare its past
chemical weapons programme and to destroy its chemical weapons facility.”

Myanmar has previously faced accusations of storing and using such weapons.

In 2013, a parliamentary report said police had used phosphorus the
previous year against protesters at a copper mine in the north of the
country, causing severe burns.

In July 2014, five journalists from Myanmar were sentenced to 10 years in
prison with hard labour over an article accusing the military of producing
chemical arms.

The previous year, Myanmar’s then quasi-civilian government denied using
chemical weapons against rebels from the Kachin ethnic minority during
clashes in the north of the country.

The US official said Washington had held talks with Myanmar’s civilian
government and military over the issue and “stands ready to assist Myanmar”
to destroy the weapons.

Myanmar was the 191st State Party to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which
came into force in 1997 and is monitored by the OPCW for compliance.

In 2005, London-based rights group Christian Solidarity Worldwide accused
the former military junta of using chemical weapons against rebels from the
Karen community.

The US allegation comes as Myanmar faces growing international legal
pressure over its treatment of another minority — the Muslim Rohingya,
thousands of whom were forced to flee to Bangladesh in a huge military
operation in 2017.

Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi is due to travel to the International
Court of Justice in The Hague in December to lead the defence in a genocide
case against Myanmar.

According to Burmese members Myanmar got Nuclear weapons as well. Which it acquired from North Korea. Just a reminder U.S. Wwest) dont distinguish between Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christians or Atheists. If you are on the side of anti democracy/freedom (socialism/communism), democracy/freedom (capitalism) will be delivered to you. Its upto MM, if it wants to remain like NK with its chemical or nuclear warheads.

I don't think USA will take any action. USA is not interested in this region, that's why they are not interested in solving the rohingya crisis. Otherwise USA intervened in many other similar conflicts which happened in Bosnia, South Sudan, East timor etc.

Its a region of interest. Every place is. If you leave any place soft, they enemy can get stronger from that place and you are attacked when not expecting. USA has many places to worry at the same time. Everyone will have their turn. USA was using East Pakistan territory before for operation inside Tibet China. This time they can use again to hinder Chinese interests in MM. Not to forget BD MM border has the largest hydrocarbon reserve. All Rohingya problem started when China started extract from that area. To counter Chinese Naval ambitions, first thing to worry about USA is south China sea, then Arabian sea and then BoB.

Buddhists have been decimated from their ancestral land in BD even without US involvement, shudder to think what happens to you folks once they set foot overtly..

Our Chakma brothers and the other Buddhist natives inhabiting CHT, what they had to go through since 1947.
You are not correct. There were no mass genocide against tribals since Independence of Bangladesh. However there were extra judicial killings by security forces, that's true.

Also it is true that there are Chakma refugees in India but they went there during the Pakistan era when the Kaptai Dam incident happened.

Also the population of tribal Buddhists did not decrease in Bangladesh. But yes, the tribals have reduced significantly percentage wise in the Chittagong hill tracts.

This is because Chakma and other tribals are now coming to industrial area of Dhaka and Chittagong and many Bengalis were settled in CHT.

Certainly the tribal Buddhist have problem but it's not that severe. Tribals are working in the administration, armed forces and the police. Bangladesh had ambassadors, high ranking army and police officers from the tribal population.

Even Myanmar's previous ambassador was a Tribal.

That's if Myanmar survives as a nation until then.
I hope you know the law of Karma being a Buddhist? What you do unto others is what you reap yourself.
If the government kills and expels children today and rape their women and burn their homes. It will come back to haunt all people of Myanmar.

Yes, and that is the moot point, isn't it. Your ancestral lands have been usurped by the colonial Bengali settlers to the extent that you are fighting for survival. Perhaps the Barua Bengali Buddhists are better off than the tribals.

Kaptai dam is just another flashpoint in the ever rising graph of tribal domination by the Bengali muslims. Why is your secular Bangladeshi government still dithering to implement the CHT accord even after two and a half decades?
