My father was one of the protesters in Beijing that time and got fired from his job when he returned to Guangzhou. A common misconception is that there was a "massacre" in the square, which was not accurate. Most civilian casualties were inflicted by army units fighting their way to the square, not at the square itself. Once the army fought its way into the square, everybody mostly dissipated.

The CCP is ultimately responsible for the social/political conditions that led to the protest and the piss poor heavy-handed response.

Not the square but environ. That is why technically it is right to say no massacre at Tiananmen Sq.

"Army fighting their way to the square" is misleading. It was 38th Army, 15th Airborne (Airforce) who start shooting and people flee like crazy.

Many elite kids also in the square -- one reason there are some reluctance of Army to shoot at first. I guess the elite kids have already given the wind to stay far away before shooting.

Foreigners claim at least 14 of the PLA's 24 army corps involved in the operation, notably the 38th, 39th, 27th, 15th airborne PLAAF -- around 200k soldiers.

With such amount of soldiers, Deng could have easily cauldron off Tiananmen square and forced protestors to leave.

The firing is a calculated move.
