I agree, same in India. Although I did not see any sweets, many muslims seem to feel better that somebody took revenge on their behalf. Nobody knew AQ or osama then, but osama did become hero for some period after that.

I wonder sometimes, if God forbid such a disaster happens again to US, would the Muslim street react the same way. After the Paris attack, most of people that I talked to had sympathies for the victims, there were a few who blamed the west and then there were some conspiracy theorists but none of them was in a celebratory mood. There was a slight fear in all of us about how the west will react to this.

Whenever Muslims and especially Arabs hear the word crusade, you can always see a hint of anger and well uneasiness in them, that is because Crusades were a terrifying episode in the relations between Muslim and western world. After a century from now Muslims will have the same reaction to the world "War on terror".

Well He is wrong about a lot things, but let's not deny that most of Muslims were happy about 9/11. I was quite young back then, all of my school mates and our teachers were quite happy about it. And yes some people were celebrating in the streets by offering sweets to everyone. So he is actually right about something this time.

And that is what I can't understand. We don't celebrate such events any more as we have seen death and destruction up close in the past 10-15 years. Palestinians were facing such cruel things for decades, how can they celebrate someone else's pain. Perhaps it was because of the conflict they were involved in, the US was supporting the other side quite openly. So they saw this as a revenge taken from the US on their behalf, well that was exactly what OBL told the people anyway.

I agree.. I would say most muslims are sad about paris attack(especially those who are sick of terrorism) but they also feel west is unnecessarily targetting them and their pain(in muslim world) is not appreciated. Only a minority of muslims feel the sense of revenge being taken, so there is a big change in many muslims. Lot of them do rationalize the whole thing using a cocktail of theories to feel good about themselves.

The change is probably because muslims themselves face terror, so islamic terrorism is not simply jihad against western crusaders anymore. Muslims are unlikely to take pride in the warrior jihadis that brought paris to its knees, for example.
