I pretty much agree to ur post except this quoted part.
In villages, where mud thatches are common, cow dung is mixed with water and do a coating, everyday.
This has nothing to do with rituals, when I asked my grandma, she said it kept the flies away and as it is odourless and cheap, it is practiced.
Muslim families do the same.
