They were goons, bad guys to begin with, he wasn't singled out for being muslim.

There's a lot of fake news in India too, x person of whatever background beaten up by a group of mostly y folk, many times religion has absolutely nothing to do with it but the media twist it to either suit their narrative, or just for generating views.. a bit of masala.
