State of Scientific and Technological Development in the Muslim World

Promoting Scientific Innovation in the Muslim World

Table-1 highlights the top-10 OIC member countries by one measure of scientific and technological productivity, namely, publication of research in established journals. Clearly, Turkey leads the pack with Egypt and Iran being distant second and third. Indonesia—the largest Muslim country (by population)— is notably absent in the top-10 most scientifically productive countries, as is Bangladesh—the third largest (by population). Pakistan, the second largest Muslim country, is only a distant eighth on this list of top-10 most productive countries

Table-2 highlights the institutional dimension of this lackluster performance. While the overall policy environment is set at the country-level, it is really the institutions where scientific and technological innovation takes place. Here the contrast is even starker than the earlier list. Of the 25 most scientifically productive institutions in the Muslim world, 10 are in Turkey, 5 in Egypt, and 3 in Malaysia. Of the top-10 institutions, 7 are in Turkey. Most notably absent from list are institutions in three of the largest Muslim countries, namely, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh that account for about 40% of the population of entire Muslim world.

I doubt whether Muslim world can churn out brands that are acceptable outside Muslim countries? Religion takes a centre stage forMuslim countries, while money is central in capitalist countries.

Many Muslim countries already follow Capitalist models. Otherwise, how they'd grow? Out of thin air?

Brands? Have you ever seen the Fly Emirates slogan?

It really depends from the point of view you are looking at. There's the business-to-consumer view, the business-to-government view and the business-to-business view.

Most of the companies mentioned engage in the latter two, which are generally worth more money than the first one. But Western countries (along with Japan and may be Korea) still take the top spot on most categories.

And generally, companies like that do not heavily engage in branding and advertising on an international scale. And if so, it is done through the appropriate and effective channels like trade shows and special magazines.

The info posted here is a big slap on everyone saying Saudi Arabia is not doing anything.

In capitalist model, money and the interest it derives is central. The fundamentals on which the theory of Corporate finance stands is interest, and Islam prohibits interest. Although there are talks around Islamic finance, it is not adopted outside Islamic world, hence banking sector in Islamic world is stunted and will remain stunted, and hence the growth. Capitalist model and Islamic model don't go hand in hand.

Second, most Muslim economies grow from the natural resources the sit on. No wonder most large companies in top 100 are natural resources companies.

Third, global image of Muslim nations is not associated with science and technology, but with primitivism and extremism. This will prove to be a big impediment for brand building.

As regarding Fly Emirates, there is nothing Islamic about it. Even Alcohol is served on board.
