ISLAMABAD: A majority of people in Pakistan think that the country is heading in a wrong direction and the present government does not deserve to be re-elected because of its poor performance.

According to a survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) of the US Republican Party and released here, 56 per cent of the people said their economic condition had worsened over the past one year and 65 per cent said they felt less secure today.

Another interesting finding of the survey is that a majority of respondents were opposed to a deal between President Pervez Musharraf and Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

The poll was conducted between August 29 and September 13 and the randomly selected sample consisted of 4,009 men and women from 256 rural and 144 urban areas of 60 districts in the four provinces.

The survey says: “As the national mood continues to sour, President Musharraf continues to bear the brunt of this voter dissatisfaction and his approval rating has dropped to an all-time low of 21 per cent, from a high of 63 per cent in September 2006.”

In addition to declining approval ratings, Gen Musharraf’s points fell in several other categories as well. The percentage of voters saying that President Musharraf should resign increased by seven points to 70 and his favourability rating dropped by 13 points to 22. Further, when asked to name the best leader for Pakistan, Gen Musharraf dropped to third place, behind both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

Now this is an interesting development. I think constructing deal with PP has brought him no good instead has affected his creditability.

Ice resentment is there but i dont believe these surveys carry much weight and in this case well had you noticed that this case the survey conducting institute is International Republican Institute (IRI) of the US Republican Party

and if i am not wrong Republicans are not much in love with us.

While the most important thing is such surveys claiming to know the opinion of all Pakistanis is also unacceptable for
1. Majority of the population live in Rural areas and access to them by such institutes through net is not all 100 not even 50%.
2. During such surveys even one person can vote again and again on net you can not claim that the person who is voting is from exactly from the area or country in question.

Now as far his popularity well the ongoing situation indeed is not his favour.

Well indeed, one has to wait and watch which way the pakistan politics take a turn. But US has a very close eye on pakistani politics, this is something which makes me sick. Just look at every poilitcal party, all they are doing is making statements that can please the americans. I hate it.
Republicans are even more worried then the current bush government as they live under somesort of pakistan nuclear phobia, one can expect these things from them.
But like you mentioned this ongoing sutation has affected Musharraf's popularity, most people majority of them really dont see the deal as a positive symbol.

our people dont know a good thing even if its handed to them on a plate. they forget the past so quickly and want to bring in these corrupt politicians to once again fleece them and the country. we like to get R*****D.

Actually its not the people here but the government itself. Majority of the people are against the deal that is going on between the government and BB. Its actually sad to see it happening after all they have done to hurt pakistan. I hope SC gives a good decision about it and over rule it. Its not in the interest of pakistan in anyway, i dont understand how musharraf feels this way, he was the same guy who at one stage use to say that BB and NS has no role in pakistan politics, what happened to him now, why the sudden change?

he is committed to democracy so he needs to make some compromises however unpopular they may be.

i have stopped believing this Survays, in one they say Mushraf is most popular leader in other they he is least popular.
What is This S***.

Wilco
