NEW YORK: Former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf is very bitter about President Asif Zardari and in an interview with known journalist Seymour Hersh called him a “criminal”, a “fraud” and a “third rater”.

Hersh, in a detailed report on Pakistan, wrote: “Musharraf did not spare his successor. ‘Asif Zardari is a criminal and a fraud. He’ll do anything to save himself. He’s not a patriot and he’s got no love for Pakistan. He’s a third-rater’.”

Musharraf said that he and General Kayani, who had been his nominee for chief of army staff, were still in telephonic contact. He said he didn’t think the Army was capable of mutiny — not the Army he knew. “There are people with fundamentalist ideas in the Army, but I don’t think there is any possibility of these people getting organised and doing an uprising. These ‘fundos’ were disliked and not popular.”

He added: “The Muslims think highly of Obama, and he should use his acceptability — even with the Taliban — and try to deal with them politically.”

Musharraf spoke of two prior attempts to create a fundamentalist uprising in the Army. In both the cases, he said, the officers involved were arrested and prosecuted. “I created the strategic force that controls all the strategic assets — eighteen to twenty thousand strong. They are monitored for character and for potential fundamentalism,” he said. He acknowledged, however, that things had changed since he’d left office. “People have become alarmed because of the Taliban and what they have done,” he said. “Everyone is now alarmed.”

Hersh said Pervez Musharraf lives in unpretentious exile with his wife in an apartment in London, near Hyde Park. Officials who had dealt with him cautioned that, along with his many faults, he had a disarmingly open manner. “At the beginning of our talk, I asked him why, on a visit to Washington in late January, he had not met with any senior Obama administration officials. ‘I did not ask for a meeting because I was afraid of being told no,’ he said.”

At another point, Musharraf, dressed casually in slacks and a sports shirt, said that he had been troubled by the American-controlled drone attacks on targets inside Pakistan, which began in 2005. “I said to the Americans, ‘Give us the Predators.’ It was refused. I told the Americans, ‘Then just say publicly that you’re giving them to us. You keep on firing them but put Pakistan Air Force markings on them.’ That, too, was denied.”

I'm guessing Mushy is missing power too much

Zardari the crazy fox outbid him in every sphere to gain power. in the world of politics there's no such thing as values or morals or beliefs or patriotism. everything is ruled by forces of self-interest coupled with demand and supply. zardari's....we have an abundance of supply, demand is created through external and internally for such people.

You reap what you sow. Removing the NRO and allowing political criminals to settle back in Pakistan can be credited to none other than Musharaf and the military complex. unfortunately our military complex is very much responsible for the mess that we're in now.

All Mushy can do is sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch the show as a spectator, and shout some quacks

NRO was a temporary ordinance, which passed its validity date.
Musharraf allowed Sharif and BB to come back to Pakistan because of lawyers, human right and pro-democratic activists.
If we remember PPP was behind the lawyers movement and criticized the ouster of politicians.
Now it is upto Judiciary of Pakistan to issue arrest warrants of criminals.

.
well Half of What Musharraf has said is true..... But let's see what happens next

This was sort of a bongi. I think he had good ideas... Probably the best Pakistan has seen in a very long time... But then these type of bongiaan are a sign that he too couldn't confront problems head on by the end.

The Pakistan First slogan turned out to be, America first and with America's permission, Pakistan second. I'm sure he wasn't some sort of an American agent as it is often simplified, but I think he just got too old for it all.

Seems more like a rape case to me - with the victim asking for a time-out and not getting any.

Couldn't he deny USA to let use drones on Pakistani soil? Or just 'say publicly' that he can / will do so?

Isn't his acts then and his statements now are insulting and shameful for Pakistan?

Yes, he should be denied it squarely, and that he didn't do. He was a traitor. And I wonder how people are saying he was better than others. You can't actually compare two evils by saying: This one is a less evil, this one is a high evil. Both have a common noun i.e. "Evil" and common attributes i.e. "Evilness". Saying "Less Evil" is no excuse to justify an Evil.

I'm sorry if it hurts anyone here, but Musharraf was, too, a traitor just like the current lot of leaders.

To read this blog I was really forced to think that we don’t like democracy either or some forces once again want dictatorship in the country. Musharraf was named as the eighth worst dictator in the world by the widely circulated 'Parade'. He was the man who suspended Pakistan’s constitution, shut down the courts, arrested several thousand dissidents and passed a law removing challenges to his continuation as president. He is responsible for the Balochistan Issue. He was the man who sold several Pakistanis in return of dollar.

Musharraf must look back at his own past before commenting on democratically elected President of Pakistan. It is very clear that a dictator never likes democracy but the other reason behind is personal grudge because it was Zardari who forced him to quit. He is a psycho case and such ill minded statement can not malign image of a democratically elected President of Pakistan.
