RAWALPINDI: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday banned former military ruler Pervez Musharraf from politics for life.

The ruling came in response to an appeal filed by the former army strongman over the rejection of his nomination papers for the National Assembly seat in Chitral.

A bench, headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan, ruled that since Musharraf had abrogated the Constitution twice, he could not be allowed to contest elections for either the National Assembly or the Senate.

The bench also rejected the former president's appeal over the rejection of his nomination papers from NA-32 (Chitral).

Also today, an anti-terrorist court in Rawalpindi ordered a two-week-long judicial remand for the retired general in the Benazir Bhutto murder case and also granted permission to Balochistan police to question him in the Akbar Bugti killing case.

Musharraf was not presented in court during Tuesday's hearing over security reasons.

Speaking to media personnel after the hearing, FIA’s special prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali alleged that Musharraf was not cooperating with the investigation team in the Benazir murder case.

Earlier last week, the court had sent him on a physical remand. Since then, FIA investigators have been questioning the former military ruler in the high profile murder probe.

Moreover, an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi rejected Musharraf’s plea for reconstitution of the joint investigation team (JIT).

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city.

The ATC had indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence.

Also today, the ATC allowed Balochistan police to question Musharraf in the case pertaining to the killing of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Khan Bugti.

Bugti was killed in a military action in the mountains of Dera Bugti on August 26, 2006 while Musharraf was president as well as army chief.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan last month after nearly four years of self-imposed exile to contest the May 11 general election.

Election officials had barred Musharraf from running for the National Assembly earlier, effectively derailing his attempts to regain a place in politics by standing at the polls.

Although Musharraf’s legal battles have provided an electrifying sideshow in the election race, he commands scant popular support and the outcome of the drama is unlikely to have much impact on the final results.

Makes sense.

BTW did Mush underestimate the reaction from within Pak ?

If he "abrogated" the constitution and gets banned for life in politics then what about those who (from the top heads of the country, to the advisors, to the ministers, to the parliamentarians, to the department heads and all those in politics) have abrogated and helped others to abrogate the constitutional rights of the common man to get quality education, access to clean water, gas, food, electricity, proper housing, reasonable livelihood, social welfare?

But what to do, the constitution does not cover the rights of the common man or maybe the politicians and the big heads are the "citizens" which the constitution refers to and all others are just worthless insects.

Hail the democratic system of "Islamic Republic" of Pakistan and the free and fair judiciary.

There goes the much awaited political version of Musraff into drain.... wonder what he gonna do now....

I don't think he did. He was in a bubble created by social media and foreign powers, but he didn't underestimate it.

In his Army days, he was always knows as a gung ho kind of guy. The 'kar lain gay, koi masla nhn' mentality. So maybe he also thought that 'judiciary say bhi muqabla kar lain gay' but it didn't quite turn out that way.

Thank you

His ex cronies who are still in high places ( COAS) surely must have their ear to the ground and would have given him an accurate feedback. ..Or is he a millstone which no one likes to carry ?

How could so many ppl be wrong in their assessment ? Why ppl were paying good money to travel with him on the flight back into Pk.

It seems that he grossly underestimated the reaction from within the country. This was compounded by the Courtiers and Sycophants surrounding him to the extent that he began to believe anything. Brig, @Samson Sharaf has explained that phenomenon very well in one of his writings. But the down-fall from the Crest of Public Opinion in Pakistan that happens periodically to some of its "heroes" has been explained by Tariq Ali. Its not new nor is it unusual.

However this 'being banned from politics from life' is quite obtuse. Musharraff should consider appealing that decision in the Supreme Court.

The army chief was a good friend of his, but after 5 years, he might have been forgotten. Chief has bigger fish to fry! Ofcourse Musharraf would have gotten a heads up by intel, government, foreign folks and his own sources within Pak.

As for the second question about people coming with him, they are mostly the executives, who run after social fame and try to create a rapport. Musharraf was good for these kind of businessman and traders.

It was not a wise move coming back to pakistan in the presence of corrupt iftikhar chaudhry still in office, has to pay the price.

So its either between Asif Ali Zardari and I ran khan now . I assume the urban people are gonna vote for Imran while the rural population might go for Asif .

Even if he was contesting it was between stalwarts of politics. Its funny that rivals of Musharraf were paranoid enough to block him forever

So you much more faith in Musharraf over Imran ? Imran seems to an intelligent person . Furthermore he will bring peace and trust not only to Pakistan but to the entire subcontinent.
