WASHINGTON: Haqqani network has no right to use Pakistani territory for wrong activities that would harm the country, former president Pervez Musharraf has said.

Addressing a press conference in Washington DC, barely an hour after he landed in the country, Musharraf said that Pakistan’s military and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) were being unfairly blamed for the terror attacks in Afghanistan.

He stated that the ISI was working in Pakistan’s interests, to counter India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) tactics in the region.

On allegations about the Haqqani network’s involvement in attacks on the US embassy in Afghanistan and support for the group by the ISI, Musharraf said that “Haqqani sahib”, alluding perhaps to Jalaluddin Haqqani, is an Afghan citizen.

He “had no right to use Pakistani territory for wrong activities which would harm Pakistan,” the former president added.

Musharraf said that either Haqqani should leave Pakistan and go to Afghanistan, or, “if Haqqani is here, he should stop crossing back and forth (across the border).”

The former president said that the Government of Pakistan should not negotiate with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. “Talking to them shows the government’s weakness,” he said.

“If we have an unstable Afghanistan on the border, if the people of Afghanistan cannot handle the situation themselves and the coalition and the US forces leave as they have decided in 2014, then there is a possibility civil war in Afghanistan,” he said.

He also said that former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was assassinated last month, was pro-Pakistan, and wanted Pakistan to be part of the reconciliation talks. Pakistan does not benefit from Rabbani’s death, he added.

In response to a question about the signing of the strategic partnership alliance between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Musharraf alleged that the KGB, Soviet Union and India have influenced Afghanistan for many years.

Accusing Afghanistan’s former Interior Minister Amarullah Saleh of being anti-Pakistan and pro-India, he said that Pakistan had offered to train Afghan troops, but the neighbouring country never responded.

Claiming that India is being given space in Afghanistan’s peace process at the cost of Pakistan, former military ruler said the US must realise that such a situation would be unacceptable for Islamabad.

“Any result of a peace process in Afghanistan in favour of India would not be acceptable to Pakistan and the US must understand this,” said Musharraf, who currently lives in self-exile outside Pakistan.

I remember the days after 9/11 when Musharraf was kissing the feet of Bush. What was more hilarious was Musharraf and indian pm Vajpaee competing for Bush's attention. Bush couldn't use Vajpaee as much as he could use Musharraf, so he did.
