Mush’s new political party closer to reality

ISLAMABAD: Lack of any political support, even from his beneficiaries, existence of grave threats to his life, three registered criminal cases and at least five petitions filed in superior and subordinate courts, seeking his trial on different charges including high treason, are the major impediments in former dictator General Pervez Musharraf’s return to Pakistan in near future, his former political colleagues say.

All of these threats are a normal for politicians in Pakistan and claim of lack of support is from a news outlet which is hostile to Gen. Musharraf.

His public owning of a political party, still in an embryonic stage, which his loyalist Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif is trying to get registered with the Election Commission (EC) ... the EC will take note of the stinging remarks of the Supreme Court contained in its July 31, 2009 judgment against Musharraf for violating the constitution through his November 3, 2007 actions. The apex court had stopped short of recommending trial of the former president for high treason.

No worries there as party has been registered and Barrister Saif is the head of the party.

But he said Pakistan was better off during Musharraf’s era than it was now as there was a tremendous growth rate, law and order was better and the Kashmir dispute was near resolution. Now, even the independent media, hostile to Musharraf, is grudgingly acknowledging all this, he said.

This statement finding a place in 'The News' article proves that even the hostile media believes that now.

At the moment, apart from Barrister Saif Musharraf’s fervent supporters include Lala Nisar, Dr Sher Afgan, and to some extent Amir Muqam, who is formally aligned with the PML-Q. The likeminded group of this party continues to shy away from associating itself with Musharraf for fear of public wrath. The PML-Q got a harsh battering in the 2008 elections due to this factor.

PML-Q recieved almost equal numbers of vote as the PPPP and PML-N. PML-Q also remained the third largets political party in Pakistan and won seats from ALL 4 four provinces. Due to the flawed distribution of seats, PML-Q didn't get the number of seats for the number of votes it get. Nawaz Sharif won seats in two provinces but PML-Q won seats in all four provinces. In Balochistan, PML-Q got second most seats (diff is one seat).

These results show that Gen. Musharraf may have become unpopular in some parts but in some parts of Pakistan he is still popular and in some parts of Pakistan he may have gained popularity.

Amongst his opponents, the fear of Gen. Musharraf's popularity is so high that they have made his return to politics a major topic of discussion in drawing rooms of Pakistan.

Hi supporters are very happy with his return because it will support democracy in Pakistan. This is right as a Pakistani citizen and no one can take that away.

His return? Which return? Return where? First ask him to return back to Pakistan, than talk about the fear of his return.

London: Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who resigned under the threat of impeachment in 2008, is reportedly considering a political comeback and plans to meet counterparts and supporters in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to discuss his political future.

“Musharraf plans to visit Bahrain at the request of the royal family at the end of March. He will then visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai,” The National quoted Rashid Qureshi, Musharraf’s spokesperson, as saying.

Musharraf, who is currently living in exile in London, indicated his desire to return to politics during a lecture tour in the United States last week.

“I am keeping my options open,” Musharraf said during his speech in Sarasota, Florida.

He also stressed that Pakistan had gone “downhill” since his departure.

According to earlier reports, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted Musharraf’s application to register a new political party named-All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), thus clearing the road for Musharraf to return to the country for another political stint.

Sources privy to the development said Musharraf was trying hard to register the party through some of his loyalists in the country for quite some time, and has now finally succeeded.

Sources said the application filed by the ECP named some of the office-bearers of APML such as Barrister Saif as Chairman, Sher Alam Khattak as President, Chuadhry Abdul Ghafoor as Senior Vice President, and Rai Mulazam Hussain as Secretary General.

Peoples Party really need support of another party in next election. If Mushi comes back then he has will of MQM, plus a support from ex-Q league members. So, its too early to under estimate him. He has support. But for sure Zardari or Nawaz can't face him in dialogue are political arena and media debates.

Nawaz and Zardari have no intellect. So you can guess Mush is better than them in this regard.
Wardi or no wardi.

Mush has far better skills to face even very hostile international media.

Zardari does not have any experience

Correct Jana, for Zardari and Nawaz. I am no fan of them either.

But then why Pakistan need a General to face the International media? Is the hostility of international media a justification enough for millitary dictator?

It look to me that in Pakistan a sustained, vibrant, all involved and free democratic society is quite a dream yet.

But participating in a democratic way by Musharraf is a positive step. Then here I see people who are very sceptical of his actions. This fear of his grabbing power again can be justified by absence of democratic process only. If he want to try democratically, then let him. He will not succeed if he is so un-popular.

If millitary has some hidden agenda other than implementing a democratic society, then i is a matter of great concern. Till now there are no such signs, I beleive.
