NEW DELHI: The Centre will soon launch a psychological campaign using multimedia messages to discourage tribals from joining the Maoist movement.

Using audiovisual content carrying development messages as primary weapons to counter the anti-government propaganda in Maoist-affected areas, four jingles in eight dialects will be aired on All India Radio and four videos will be telecast on Doordarshan to reach out to the maximum number of people in four Maoist-affected states. The films will also be shown in Maoist-affected villages using a “video on wheels” facility.

According to officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs, the jingles will focus on Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Emotive themes such as “no gun, but pen”, “development, not violence”, “surrender arms, join the mainstream” will be used. The jingles will have details of the govt’s development plans for those living on the margins. The jingles will also talk about MGNREGS, Awas Yojna, Aangabadi, old-age pension schemes, widow pension schemes, free education scheme for girls, mid-day meal and other schemes.

Of the four video messages, one is about the CRPF fighting Maoists while the rest talk about the problems being faced by the tribals due to left-wing extremism.

“These jingles have been recorded in eight dialects, and each lasts between four to 10 minutes. This is to reach out to people and create awareness on the development projects and rights. The messages urge the villagers and tribals to join mainstream instead of Maoist groups,” said an official.
