Religious scholar Mufti Mohammad Taqi Usmani survived an assassination attempt on Friday as unidentified gunmen opened fire on two vehicles in Karachi, killing two guards and injuring two others.

According to initial reports, two separate incidents of firing took place in two different parts of the city ─ Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Sharea Faisal. However, police later clarified that both cars were targeted by armed pillion riders on the Nipa flyover.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) East Zone Amir Farooqi, police guard Farooq and private guard Sanobar Khan, son of Shaukat Khan were killed in the attack.

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Director Dr Seemi Jamali said that another person injured in the attack, Maulana Aamir, is currently in critical condition.

Maulana Aamir was brought to JPMC with multiple bullet wounds in the head and chest and has been placed on a ventilator, she explained.

DIG Farooqi said that a bystander also sustained injuries in the attack. He further said that bullet shells of 9mm pistol have been collected from the crime scene, whereas closed-circuit TV (CCTV) camera footage and other evidence are being analysed.

Karachi police chief Dr Amir Shaikh confirmed that Mutfi Usmani and his wife were in one of the cars targeted. He added that Mufti Usmani remained unhurt in the attack.

Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a "strongly worded condemnation "of the incident and expressed his anguish at the killings of Mufti Usmani's guards.

"Scholars such as Mufti Usmani are assets to the country and the Islamic world," he said in a statement released by the PM House. "Provincial government should ensure the security of religions scholars."

The prime minister labelled the attack on Mufti Usmani a "deep and disgusting conspiracy" and ordered that "all possible measures be taken to expose it".

One security guard from Sindh Police namely Farooq and one another guard Sanober, are martyred. Mualana Shahab is injured & Mualana Taqi Usmani is safe. Both religious seminaries were attacked at the same place and firing did not take place on different locations. Initial reports suggests that 4 Terrorists on two motorbikes targeted both vehicles in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Nipa Chowrangi.

This attack is more about to fuel sectarian unrest and that too right before Pakistan Day on 23rd March when the whole nation is preparing to celebrate Pakistan Day that too when Pakistan Armed Forces thwarted Indian aggression & violations with surprise. On other hand, we can't ignore the fact that such sleeper cells do operate under the umbrella of Political parties as well and current situation pretty much clarifies that what kind of elements are interested to cause us harm.

KARACHI: Renowned religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani survived an assassination attempt on Friday as unidentified gunmen opened fire on two vehicles near Karachi's NIPA Chowrangi, killing two.

Mufti Taqi Usmani's two guards, one a Sindh police official and the other belonging to a private company, were killed in the targeted attack. The vehicles, which belonged to Darul Uloom Korangi, were travelling together and were fired at by assailants on motorcycles.

Senior journalist Ansar Abbasi spoke with Mufti Taqi Usmani after the attack who told him he was traveling with his wife and two grandsons, all who remained unhurt. Mufti Taqi further said the motorcyclists fired from the back at the vehicle and then went forward and fired.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Gulshan Tahir Noorani dismissed earlier reports regarding two separate incidents of firing and said, "It is only one incident of firing from the same spot on two vehicles."

"Moulana Taqi Usmani was travelling in a black Honda Civic along with his family. The second car with his driver and guard was a Toyota Corolla. The cars were travelling together and were fired on by motorcyclists near the ramp which goes from Aladdin Park to NIPA Chowrangi" the SP Gulshan said.

"First, Moulana Taqi Usmani’s car was fired on in which his guard, a Sindh police official, and driver were shot. The driver took the car straight to Liaquat National Hospital. The second car crashed at NIPA Chowrangi in which Sanobar Khan was martyred and the driver Amir Shahab was injured,” he added.

Jinnah Hospital spokesperson Dr Seemi Jamali said, “Security guard Sanober Khan was brought to the hospital dead. The second Amir Shahab is critically wounded and is on ventilator.”

IG Sindh Kaleem Imam said, “Investigations are underway. A Sindh police officer embraced martyrdom in protecting Moulana Sb.” The police officer who was guarding Mufti Usmani has been identified as Muhammad Farooq.

Officials from the crime unit and investigative teams reached the site of the incident and gathered evidence. Nine bullets of 9mm-bore were found at the site, police said.

Counter-Terrorism Department in-charge Raja Umar Khattab said, "As per initial reports, four terrorists on two motorcycles fired at the cars."

"Mufti Usmani was targeted and his cars were fired at after recce," the CTD in-charge said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned assassination attempt on Mufti Taqi Usmani and expressed sorrow over the killing of his guards in the targeted attack.

"The attack on an esteemed figure like Mufti Taqi Usmani is a conspiracy," the prime minister said, vowing to make every possible effort to expose this conspiracy.

'Mufti Taqi Usmani was receiving threats'
Governor Sindh Imran Ismail while speaking to Geo News said, "Maulana Taqi Usmani had been receiving threats for some time. He had reported that he had been receiving threats and his security had been increased."

"Hopefully we will arrest the suspects by this evening," he added.

CM orders immediate arrest of perpetrators
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought a report from Additional IG Karachi. He asked the additional IG to specify whether it is an incident of targeted killing or not.

Shah also ordered the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
