Independent TV sues AL MP; counter suit against Salman F Rahman

Independent TV yesterday sued ruling Awami League legislator Golam Maula Rony for assaulting its two journalists, which prompted the lawmaker to file a counter suit against Salman F Rahman, owner of the private television channel.

Rony beat up the two journalists at his Topkhana Road office in the capital, leaving them seriously injured.

Reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul belong to a team that produces the crime-investigative show “Talash” for the TV channel.

Talking to The Daily Star, Imtiaz said they had information that “a bribe of more than Tk 1 crore, sent from Patuakhali, was to reach the lawmaker” at his office on the ninth floor of Meherba Plaza on Topkhana Road.

Imtiaz said they were waiting at a staircase to grab the footage of the “bribe being delivered by a government official and a contractor.”

But at around 1:15pm, the lawmaker showed up at the staircase and out of the blue landed a punch on his face, Imtiaz said.

Rony’s associates then piled on with the assault. They broke their camera, took away its memory card, and beat up Imtiaz and Mukul with large wooden rulers.

Rony, MP from Patuakhali-3 (Golachipa), and his associates held them hostage for two hours before calling in the police to hand them over to the law enforcers, accusing them of impersonating journalists trying to extort money from the ruling party lawmaker, Imtiaz said.

Imtiaz and Mukul, showing their ID cards, managed to convince police that they were indeed journalists. Police then took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Mukul was still under treatment at 9:30pm.

The broken camera and the memory chip were returned to the journalists.

Following the assault, senior journalists went to the spot and asked Rony to apologise and provide the injured journalists with compensation.

Independent TV, in the evening, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station against Rony and 20 others for attempted murder, assault and vandalism.

Contacted, Rony claimed that he had not assaulted the journalists and the question of offering an apology did not arise.

However, footage recovered from the memory chip, which was telecast by Independent TV and other private TV stations, showed that the lawmaker made the first strike. He was also seen apologising for the attack.

But Rony, talking to this correspondent, insisted that he had neither hit the two journalists, nor instigated their being beaten up. He blamed the assault on others present in the office.
“Furthermore, these journalists had been following me for the past three or four days,” he added.

On Wednesday, Imtiaz and Mukul interviewed the lawmaker regarding “his driver’s family living in the flat allotted to him at the NAM Bhaban” on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital, Imtiaz said.

Late last night, Rony filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against Salman F Rahman, Imtiaz and Mukul.

Salman is also a former adviser to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina.

In the case, Rony accused Imtiaz and Mukul of storming his office, beating him up, threatening him with death and trying to extort money from him.

Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a press statement condemned the assault on the journalists.

Arrest warrant against Rony


Embattled ruling party lawmaker Golam Maula Rony was arrested at Baridhara area in the capital Wednesday afternoon shortly after a Dhaka court cancelled his bail and ordered his arrest for beating up two journalists.

A team of detectives arrested Rony while he was waiting for his car at the gate of Bashundhara Residential Area around 3:40pm Wednesday, Jahangir Hossain Matabbar, deputy commissioner (South) of Detective Branch of police, told The Daily Star.

Around one half hours before the arrest, Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan cancelled his bail and issued an arrest warrant in connection with the Saturday assault.

Rony received the ad-interim bail on Sunday from another court in connection with the case filed by the private television channel on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Magistrate Adnan passed the order after complainant Yusuf Ali, an assistant manager of the Independent Television, appealed to the court seeking cancellation of Rony’s bail.

Rony on Saturday beat up reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash, for Independent TV, at his Topkhana Road office in the capital.

The incident took place the reporters went to Rony’s office on information that a bribe of more than Tk 1 crore, sent from Patuakhali, was to reach the lawmaker at his office.

Later, Rony sued Imtiaz and Mohsin accusing them of attacking him (Rony), sending him death threats and trying to extort money from him.

The journalists got bail from the High Court in the case on Tuesday.

nothing really, he started writing about salman rahman when journos from independent tv went after his chadabazi in his constituency. He was also charged by awami league hierarchy for his chadabazi.......it went out of hand and he ended up beating up the journos.....to divert attention from this, he started blaming salman rahman. Salman Rahman doesnt have time for such 2 taka mps....he can buy 500 of these.

because rony has a big mouth, he criticized haseena in a few cases and was also defending hei at one point. Add to that he tries to portray himself as an honest simple man......

^That's it! He embarrassed the ruling party on quite a few occasions and that's why he is being harassed now. Btw, I'm unaware of any corruption by Rony or at least they didn't make news.

He recently openly wrote a column on dervish's share market looting probably 1/2 month ago. Previously, more than one year ago I myself read his article where he told that Pakistan was divided by a conspiracy where Mujib was used to implement the blueprint of enemy. Reading this column I started to think that he was a BNP MP but my colleagues at office made me clear that he was a BAL MP and I was surprised. That time he used to write some straightforward statements on his columns. Then Hasina became disturbed and tightened him like once he was investigated for tax scam. After some harassment (medicine) he again came on line and started to openly flatter Hasina.

I was sort of fan of this guy but that day what he did is never acceptable and it's not a rumor as well....video of his actions are available. He is disguised terror. But yes, he hates dervish, that's a big thing and the situation is simply complex now....he won't get public sympathy for his bare attack on journos.

I don't think today he got arrested for visual journo attack reason, there's something else behind....it's not possible in BD that for beating journos one MP will get arrested.
