All friends,
I'll be moving to Shanghai, China for an assignment after Chinese new Year. It's not the first time I'm visiting China but in past I visited for short term on business visa and was not worried at as because staying in hotel and all expanses were cover by company at actual.

But I've got an existing opportunity from the company I/m working to go to China for 1+ year. Company will be helping me to rent an apartment in Pudong near Lu Jia Zui. But I'm not sure about living expanses after apartment is taken care. Of course I'll be moving with my family.

I'd request some Chinese, experienced Indian Pakistani Members to advise me ...

  1. Is the area OK to live (convenience), not worried about safety. Shanghai seems to be very safe city better than EU cities. and what shall be average expanse with decent living standard.
  2. Will I be able get a car on long term lease. If any one knows a good lease company. I've checked Avis/ Hertz those are crazy expansive
  3. Any Indian grocery store
  4. Any Indian Club or association - I need to keep my wife busy so that she do not feel home sick
  5. Any advise on traveling around. I'd like to utilize my stay to max to know China better

.
2. Better to take public transportation or taxi than rent a car. Convenient, fast and cheap. Most Chinese buy car just for show. IMO.

1. No need to worry about safety.

For other questions, I think you can go to some websites for expats in China to find answers.

1) Thanks, I'm not worried for safety I felt OK during my visits to Shanghai in past!
2) Sounds like good advise, I'll try both options.
5) Beijing, Suzhou and Hangzhou are on my cards.

Do you know any good place for kids to visit?

LOL, that will continue!!
There is no PDF without Chinese guys talking about India and her problems and Indians talking about lack of freedom there.

Do you have any Idea about access of Facebook and You tube in China?

Basic, greetings only!!

Learning Chinese is a very good idea, even if you are only planning to live here for 1 year as you say in your OP.

As for safety you don't have to worry too much. Only the people who are actively looking for trouble will find it, while most normal people won't be affected by such things. (Btw, trying to argue with people regarding the Sino-Indian border dispute or anything else related to Chinese nationalism is called looking for trouble).

Shanghai is a fantastic city, and you won't have problems finding things to do. And Suzhou is a great city that is right next to Shanghai as well.
