Move Over Huawei, First Chinese 5G Phone to Hit Stores May Be Vivo's

(Yicai Global) April 17 -- The first Chinese fifth-generation wireless smartphone may come from Vivo Communication as handset makers, unfazed by technological hurdles, burn money in the competition to claim the first spot in the nascent market.

Vivo plans to release mass-produced 5G mobile phones in China in the middle of this year, Qin Fei, director of research and development at Vivo 5G, told Yicai Global, adding that the first models will be priced at the same level of 4G ones. Huawei Technologies has deemed to launch its 5G device in June.

China will start piloting the commercial use of 5G networks in the first half of this year, and go large-scale next year, according to the plan of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The already released prototypes of 5G handsets look quite similar to the existent 4G ones, with the exception of some more folding models.

Technical headwinds should still tame the biggest cheers. 5G phones can easily freeze in daily use due to low signals, for example when driving around a corner in a parking lot. Vivo's engineers have been doing field tests day and night in the past few months to solve this difficult problem, Qin said. The firm's prototype also consumes slightly more energy than a 4G phone, which is still acceptable, according to the director.

These obstacles require more money to be burned, as the Dongguan-based firm will spend at least CNY10 billion (USD1.5 billion) in total in R&D this year, and it has kicked off the R&D of 5G enhancement and 6G technology, according to Qin.

This time can be compared to the beginning of the 4G era when people didn't realize what big changes short video applications like TikTok, webcasting, and the online-to-offline economy would bring to their lives, Qin said. 5G will help people connect to numerous scenes around, including smart home appliances, intelligent factories and other Internet of Things devices, Qin added.

Field tests of China Mobile's Shanghai branch show that Vivo's 5G phone can stably support 5G webcasting, online games, high-definition video, and WeChat group video calls, Qin said. The data rate of the phone can exceed 800 megabits per second outdoors and 1.5 gigabits per second in a lab.

Richard Yu: No 5G version for the Huawei P30 series
Mar 27, 2019

The Huawei P30 and P30 Pro launched yesterday in Paris. The phones are available in multiple configurations but there was no mention of a 5G version. If you are expecting one, sorry to dash your hopes, but Huawei says there won’t be a 5G variant of the phones.

The info was revealed by Huawei’s head of mobile business, Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu) in an interview with CNET. In the top executive’s words “the world is not yet prepared for Huawei’s 5G flagship phone”. That sounds ironical considering the foldable Mate X is a 5G device.

Mr. Yu did say they are considering making the next Mate series 5G ready. The next Mate series should be the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro and they are expected to launch in Autumn 2019.

Huawei’s VP of Global Product Marketing, Clement Wong, also revealed that they could have made the P30 and P30 Pro 5G devices but the timing isn’t right. He added that he believes 5G won’t be a big deal until 2020.

Even without 5G, the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro are pretty impressive phones. Their main selling point is their cameras which boasts impressive zoom capabilities and low-light performance. Both phones are already available for purchase in Europe with a starting price of €799.

You want to explain to us that phone you saw in stores for half a month?
Sounds like their 5G chip simply isn't ready. So much for being a 5G leader.

Oppo looks to Dubai as international launchpad for 5G technology

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo's latest bid bolsters its place in the global smartphone market. In the final quarter of 2018, the Chinese firm ranked 4th in worldwide sales. The company has unveiled its Reno line of devices and chose the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the stage for the international launch.

Andy Shi, president of Oppo Middle East and Africa, commented the UAE is one of the fastest-growing areas across the whole world. It is also an important market for Oppo business growth with high average selling prices.

Oppo is hoping to double sales here in the next year, driven by the likes of this new smartphone offering. Meanwhile, the UAE is attempting to become one of the first countries to make 5G commonplace. Oppo announced a so-called 5G landing project aimed at intensifying development with local telecoms providers.

"We already launched the first 5G device that is commercially available in Switzerland just a week ago, and also in the Middle East region, we launched our partnership with Etisalat for our first 5G commercial test in the region and we're working with some of the leading carriers, we're targeting at being the first one to bring 5G smartphones commercially available as well," Shi said.

Henry Tang, director of standards at Oppo, commented general consumers will be able to enjoy the full benefits of 5G technology after the penetration rate of 5G smartphones reaches a certain threshold.

Oppo isn't the only smartphone provider racing to unlock 5G's potential, its Chinese competitor Huawei is also laying its 5G foundations. Huawei partners with regional telecoms providers of Etisalat, du (Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company) and Saudi Telecom to build infrastructure across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. It also hopes to roll out a network in neighboring Bahrain.

Lol! Well that’s just Chinese phone company doublespeak.

Unlike Huawei the Qualcomm 5G chip is ready. Multiple phones are shipping in a few weeks including non-Chinese ones. For instance the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is already taking orders and saying they are shipping in the beginning of May.

Huawei is probably held up by just a software issue. Don’t worry Huawei will catchup quickly once they copy the Qualcomm 5G software drivers or something. For now it will just have to be a waiting game for them

Golly, the beginning of May 2019? How exciting!

You're talking about tiny phones while Huawei has already been shipping far more important 5G network infrastructure equipment.

5G customer-premises equipment(CPE) utilizing Balong 5G01 chipset.
Announced February 25, 2018.
Downlink speed 2.3Gbps.

Hu Houkun, rotating chairman at Huawei, said at a global analyst conference in Shenzhen that the company has shipped more than 70,000 5G base stations, up from 40,000 announced in late February.

Huawei also said it has signed 40 commercial contracts to supply carriers with 5G technology, and shipped more than 70,000 5G base stations.

Wrong chip. The cellphone chip is the 5000. You are taking about the 5G01 chip.

Besides if you want to change the topic off cell phones Verizon Inseego 5G routers were shipping with the Qualcomm X50 way back in November.

Would you stop making a fool of yourself by jumping into this thread.. First you make up this obvious lie about Huawei already having a 5G phone in stores for "half a month". Just pulled it out of your butt just for no reason other to add a post. I have to show you a quote from the CEO of Huawei himself to shut you up (which I'm surprised you didn't say it was all a lie).

Now you are rambling on some tangent about volume...when pretty much every phone maker on the planet other than Huawei is going to be using the Qualcomm X50.

Just give it up. I'm not going to waste my time talking to somebody who is clueless.
