Mossad sees Qatar as 'real problem' -leaks

DOHA - The chief of Israel's spy agency Mossad warned the United States that Qatar, which is to host the 2022 football World Cup, poses "a real problem," in a US diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks on Friday.

It says Meir Dagan issued the warning in a July 12 meeting with a senior US counter-terrorism official, Francis Fragos Townsend.

Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, tries to please all parties in the Middle East, including Syria, Iran and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, to underline its independence while hosting a major US base, he said.

The result is that he is "annoying everyone," according to Dagan, who pointed to frequent fallout from damaging coverage of Arab states by Qatar's satellite news channel Al-Jazeera.

The station could even provoke the Middle East's next war because Arab leaders hold Sheikh Hamad personally responsible for the coverage, according to the Mossad chief.

"I think you (the United States) should remove your bases from there ... seriously," Dagan, who retires in December, is quoted as saying. "They have confidence only because of the US presence."

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 bid committee, told reporters in Zurich on Thursday after the World Cup announcement that his country would also host Israel if it qualifies for the finals.

The gas-rich Arab state, which does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, will respect the rules of FIFA, world football's governing body, and not discriminate against any participants in the finals, he said.

Qatar agreed to allow the United States to use a base on Qatari soil to bomb Iran, according to a report in the newspaper Al-Arabiya based on secret diplomatic cables published by the website WikiLeaks.

Qatar also agreed to pay 60 percent of the upkeep costs for the Al-Udeid airbase, which has already been used by the U.S. military to launch air sorties over Iraq.

Although Qatar backed the elimination of the Iranian offensive capability by military means, Qatar reportedly agreed to support a strike only in return for U.S. guarantees that operations at the South Pars natural gas field, owned jointly by Qatar and Iran, would not be threatened.

Another WikiLeaks document quoted Mossad Chief Meir Dagan characterizing Qatar as "problematic" and its leader as "annoying everyone". According to Dagan, Qatar is trying to cozy up to everyone – Syria, Iran and Hamas – in an attempt to beef up its security.

"I think that you should remove your bases from [Qatar]," Dagan told American diplomats, according to the WikiLeaks document, "[The Qataris] owe their security to the presence of the Americans]."

Or a propaganda stage being set to cause mistrust among all middle east leaders and make it easy to negotiate for an attack. So far a strong Arab voice in support of peaceful resolution with Iran had been holding the invasion back.

Arabs have come to the conculsion they will not be able to defeat israel, they r on a policy " aap apnay ghar may khosh or hum apnay ghar main". But the problem with iran it is using the minorities in these countries in kuwat in 80' hizbullah, in bahrain months a ago cell was cought working to make fitna, saudia just had sort of war with houthies for months, they had many problems during the 80's with shia minority , lebanon, moracco, sudan latest wat happened in ghambia and they cut their ties with iran there was a thread a week ago on this forum.

Yesterday there was an expert from lebanon on alarabia tv said since iran is bigger country it has to take steps that can boost the confidence of the smaller countries in the region ( if u take it like that if india is arming itself and expanding its millitary base we pakistanies r naturally should be effected).

I understand Tariq. Anyway about Morocco for exemple:
they complained shias were paid by Iran to make a hell there. When in Morocco this is a very old shia communauty and it was found it was non sense but the king wanted to show good points to the Saudi
And you know why?

Thanks for ur reply, Saudia and Moracco enjoy very good relatios from many years, why the moraccan didnot make the saudies happy ( or show) earlier?.

It is kind of strange when ppl blaim saudies for worsening the relation with other countries.
