Morocco cut diplomatic tie with Iran

. .
RABAT (Reuters) - Morocco will sever diplomatic ties with Iran over Tehran’s support for the Polisario Front, a Western Sahara independence movement, the Moroccan foreign minister said on Tuesday.

Morocco claimed Western Sahara after colonial Spain left, but Polisario fought a guerrilla war for independence for the Sahrawi people until a U.N.-backed ceasefire.

Morocco will close its embassy in Tehran and will expel the Iranian ambassador in Rabat, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita told reporters.

He said that Iran and its Lebanese Shi’ite ally, Hezbollah, were supporting Polisario by training and arming its fighters, via the Iranian embassy in Algeria.

“Hezbollah sent military officials to Polisario and provided the front with ... weapons and trained them on urban warfare,” Bourita said.

Algeria, Morocco’s neighbor, hosts camps of displaced from the conflict region and Polisario members. It was not immediately possible to get Iranian reaction to the Moroccan accusation. Iran has backed Polisario in the past.

The Western Sahara region has effectively been split by an earthen wall separating an area controlled by Morocco that it claims as its southern provinces and territory controlled by the Polisario, with a U.N.-mandated buffer zone between them.

In 2009, Morocco cut diplomatic links with Iran, accusing it of questioning Sunni rule of Bahrain, a Gulf Arab island that has a Shi’ite majority. Ties were gradually restored around 2014, but they were never strong, with Rabat backing Tehran’s arch-rival, Saudi Arabia.

Well done Morocco.

Egypt knew the disastrous role of these Farsis back in 1970s and cut diplomatic ties with them. Later on, KSA and others did the same and now the harmful role of these Mullahs reached Morocco regardless of it's being located far away from Iran on the Atlantic ocean, they still get some of Iran's disastrous stupidity.

Iran has close relations with Arab republics like Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, as well as Oman which is not an Arab republic. Who cares about Morocco. Backwater. One of the last absolute monarchies left in the world.

Al Hadath: "Morocco accuses the Lebanese Hezbollah of training elements of the separatist Polisario Front "

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Nasser Bureita said on Tuesday that he will receive the Chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Rabat and will ask him to leave Morocco "immediately".

"I have just returned from a visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran where I met with Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Darif and informed him of the decision of the Kingdom of Morocco to sever its relations with Iran," Bourita told a news briefing.

"The ambassador of His Majesty in Tehran left Iran today and I will receive the Chargé d'affaires at the Embassy of Iran within 30 minutes in order to demand that he leaves the national territory immediately." He stressed that this decision is a response to the apparent Iranian involvement through Hezbollah in the alliance with the Polisario to target National security and the supreme interests of the Kingdom.

He noted that Morocco has strong evidence and specific names and facts that confirm Hezbollah's support for the Polisario to target the higher interests of Morocco.
