More than 14% of Israelis with doctorates live abroad: Report
Recent data show that many highly-skilled or professional people are leaving Israel, and that more than 14 percent of Israelis with doctorate degrees live abroad.
A report released on Tuesday by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) found that in 2011 more than 14 percent of all Israelis holding doctorates in basic sciences or engineering had been living abroad, Haaretz reported.
Among Israelis with PhDs in the humanities or social science, the rate is 3.8 percent, but overall the rate for all Israelis with doctorates is 10.5 percent.
The report added that about five percent of all Israelis who received a degree from an institute of higher education during the years 1985 to 2005, a total of 18,025 out of 360,500 people, had been living overseas for three or more years.
Among doctorate graduates, the rate of return was a much lower 4.1 percent, the CBS found. Among Israelis holding bachelor’s degrees, 4.8 percent are living abroad, while among those with master’s degrees the rate is 4.2 percent.
The CBS report noted that those with degrees in science and engineering are far more likely to be abroad than those who studied the humanities or social science.
Among Israelis with advanced degrees in medicine, 7.2 percent were residing abroad as of 2011, for three or more years. Israelis with master’s degrees in mathematics were the most likely to have picked up for foreign shores, with 16.7 percent living abroad.
