More Japanese students prefer Chinese mainland to US

You prefer the thai jasmine rice? they also have thai northern rice which is very sticky. Never did get used to using the fingers / hands to eat. I can eat with that style if i have to, or to be respectful, but i prefer using chopsticks. I just don't like the idea sometimes of food getting under my nails.

LOL. I like chopsticks and use it all the time (even when they bring forks in some Western-style restaurants). But, I tried several times to eat rice using fingers when I had a friend from a country in the dorm. We used to cook chicken rice in the common kitchen and eat together. I used to copy him and eat using fingers.

It feels different, but a few try won't kill anyways.

LOL!!

In my first year of grad school i was tossed in a room with 2 international students; one was from Bangladesh and the other was from Thailand. Both of them would eat with their fingers and eat with their mouths open? I suppose that is a norm in Bangla dietary habit and also for Thais. They both used to cook in our kitchen and instead of eating on the table , would both sit on the floor with their legs crossed on yoga position as they eat. LOL! So you see where my affinity for chicken curry / curry came from. To be honest i used to eat what they cooked ...to save money. :P

I could never get the hand of using fingers to eat tho. The rice + food would fall on one's lap, it would ooze down one's hands. Ya, no, prefer chopsticks. Its cleaner. And i mean no offense to folks here who prefer using their hands to eat...just my preference.

They knew how much i HATED to heaer them chew with their mouths open. They would do it so loud to tease me. Ya, a big big pet peve of mines. LOL.

More Japanese students prefer Chinese mainland to US

Japanese students in the Chinese mainland outnumber those studying in the US, according to Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, a Taiwan news outlet reported on Monday.

Some 42,000 Japanese studied in the US in 2004, half the total studying abroad. In 2011, the number was down to only just over 20,000, 35 percent of Japanese students being educated overseas.

The number of Japanese going to the Chinese mainland to study has been rising since 2009 and now surpasses the US.

Japan saw its peak in 2004 when 83,000 sought academic careers overseas and the number has decreased since.

Some Japanese experts say the decline indicates young Japanese are satisfied with the domestic situation rather than preparing for challenges outside.

A ministry spokesman said: "Choices are various for studying abroad nowadays, not just limited to the US."

Many Japanese universities have an increasing number of exchange programs with Chinese universities and Japanese companies now tend to prefer people with academic experience in Asia rather than the US or Europe as previously.

Tuition fees are another reason. Annual fees in US universities are almost twice those charged by Japanese universities.

Why not? Good education and affordability? Go for it. I always am a supporter of studying abroad; China, Korea, US, etc!

I definitely wish to see more and more students from across the Northeast and Southeast Asia to come and study in China.

Heck, I am one of the aspirants to do science there in the Mainland. But, for me, it is like moving from one city to another, for foreign students, it will be a whole different experience.

They will find nothing but a warm embrace and world class facilities.

Yes, and i suppose this will be an opportune time for students to improve and perfect their working understanding of Chinese / Mandarin. I suppose these are the benefits of full immersion. I would recommend the following cities in the mainland for foreign students: Shanghai , Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Beijing.

Outside of mainland China, I would also endorse Taipei. Taiwanese academic facilities in Taipei are world renowned and almost every Taiwanese speaks or has a working understanding of English. Which was very surprising for me when i studied there many many many moons ago. :)

Science? Respectable man! Looks like most of you are doing something for greater good, while I am working for living, damn.

Yes you were right, other than Japanese being welcome to Shanghai, so as Taiwan bros. Other than renting out my apartments .. LOL .. I like the lifestyles they brought here like restaurants (e.g. 居酒屋), cafe, bookstores (e.g. 诚品书店), Karaoke, spa, as well as many other cultures. And we all know HK and Korean (I rent one big apartment to a senior LG executive) have also added a lot of colors to Shanghai. All are welcome study, work and live in Shanghai!
