Mohammed Morsi: Egypt's ex-leader sentenced to death

.
This is why the middle east is in such a chaos. The fault is with us, the citizens. We change our minds constantly. One day, Saddam is the hero of all the Arabs, the next day, they want him hanged. One day, Assad is the most popular leader in the middle east, and then he suddenly becomes the worse. Egypt wants democracy, thousands die, but then everyone changes their mind. The story is repeated again wherever you look. No long term plans, no real vision. Just emotional outbursts that create heroes & enemies out of movements day in and out.
and we can add to that list a revolution against the shah started by socialists and pro democracy groups then turned into the islamic republic of Iran

Don't worry there wouldn't be any kind of that. none really support him not even close to 2% of Egyptians.

I hope that you are right but I find it hard to believe that only 2% of the 90 million Egyptians support Morsi and thus by extension the MB.

I know that the MB is somewhat a diverse bunch too. That's why a deal should be reached.

I seriously believe that the constant tension between anti-MB elements in Egypt and the pro-MB elements could cause harm to Egypt on the long. That's why I ask if there are no other options?

For instance as I wrote give long jail sentences to BOTH the Mubarak regime members (leading ones) and Morsi's. If somebody is proven guilty of murder etc. then give them death sentences for all I care.

I don't know. As I said I hope the best for Egypt as I always have done and will do.

In any case I consider most of the leaders in the MENA region and Muslim world to be highly incompetent people with few exceptions so I don't care about them at all.

You sure only 2%? Kind of like 2% of Hamas supporters in Gaza? That's why Israel, PA and Egypt could not topple Hamas for past 9 years. What I don't understand is sentenced against Palestinians who have nothing to do with your internal affairs.

MB in Egypt has large support base but not overwhelming 50% plus. What happens in egypt is decision of Egyptian people. But leave Palestinians out of it.

.
He was the first elected president of the republic of Egypt....
So only 2% were the majority when he was voted into office?

He was reliant on the revolutionary and anti-old regime vote for his victory in the second round of the elections to narrowly beat Ahmed Shafik.

He came out in top in the first round with of IIRC around three million votes which I believe is a close number to the MBs base support in Egypt, although the number may be insignificant in regards to the population of Egypt three million politically active people is huge, but the reality in Egypt is that only tens of thousands (if that) are actually active as a result of Morsi's disastrous term, the crackdown, and the splintering of the MB.

.
But is it worth the risk? I am talking about the tension it could create in Egypt. Would it not be better to sentence him to a long jail sentence instead along with Mubarak and his old guard? This way everyone could be happy more or less and start from a fresh?

I don't care about the MB, Morsi or any leader in Egypt. What I care about is Egypt as a country and the people regardless who rules.

We want to see progress, justice, peace and prosperity in Egypt and every other Arab state.

A civil war in Egypt would have a big impact for KSA as a neighbor and probably also impact Jordan. It would be a catastrophe.
the risk already is there since morsi was kicked out of power they care more about the brotherhood than their country or the lives of their followers and they will never ever let things go no matter what we do there is a saying when a brotherhood member reason with you it means he could not find a way to kill you
dont worry our situation right now is much more stronger than it was year ago we are in the right path

There are still three more steps until an execution can actually be carried out.

First, the result of the appeal must end in the same verdict, which rarely happens in cases where the death sentence was dished out.

Second, an executive branch of the judiciary has to approve the felony court's decision to carry out the execution, which is usually a formality if the defendant's appeal fails.

Third, the case is put to the Grand Mufti of Alazhar for approval. Usually this is the point where the majority of cases that get the past two steps get dropped to a life sentence.

Just of note is that of the thousand plus death sentences dished out in Egypt in the past two years, only around fifteen have actually been carried out, many of which were for ABM terrorists. Btw of the thousand or so sentences hundreds were for people tried in absentia, the full punishment by law has to be dished out, awaiting an appeal by the absent party.

As for Mubarak he was reconvicted for corruption charges and is awaiting the court of cessations verdict on an appeal filed by the general prosecutor to put Mubarak back in the felony courts dock on charges related to the killing of protesters, charges that had before to a conviction and acquittal. Mubarak himself is unimportant, spending his days in a hospital, his sons however are a threat to both the current admistration and Egypt as a whole. They were also convicted on corruption charges with their father.

Thanks for the explanation bro.

Let us hope so @Mahmoud_EGY . We have enough of trouble/conflict/war as it is now. Don't want the most populous country in the MENA region to follow suit.

Besides many of al-Sisi's decisions and statements have been good and something that I support. Especially his push for more Arab cooperation which is crucial for the stabilization of the region post "Arab Spring".

I know how strange it sounds for someone who just knows everything just from the media specially the western ones which compare sides as if it was two equal sides. just believe me things on the ground isn't like what it looks like.

I never ever believed that the MB were the majority or that most Egyptians support them. I do watch Arab news on a weekly basis and thus also Egyptian media.

My main worry was that this death sentence (of course there is a long way from such a penalty being executed as Frogman explained) could create divisions in Egypt which could destabilize the country.

Also from an objective viewpoint it would be a good statement to deal with guilty people from the Mubarak regime and the Morsi regime on a equal footing at least those who are guilty of the same crimes. I know that some trials are ongoing already which is good.

I believe that such moves could calm things down even further.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Condemns Mohamed Morsi's Death Penalty

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Condemns Mohamed Morsi's Death Penalty
Istanbul: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today condemned the death sentence handed out by an Egyptian court to former president Mohamed Morsi, saying it recalled "ancient Egypt".

"The popularly elected president of Egypt, chosen with 52 per cent of the vote, has unfortunately been sentenced to death," Erdogan said at a rally in Istanbul, to howls of protest from the crowd.

"Egypt is turning back into ancient Egypt," Erdogan said, referring to the old Pharaonic rule of the land that ended over two millennia ago.

"The West, unfortunately, is still turning a blind eye to Sisi's coup," he added. Morsi was overthrown in 2013 by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who is now president after winning elections last year.

"While they (the West) abolished the death penalty in their own countries, they just look on as spectators at this execution in Egypt," he added.

Turkey, like the EU, has itself abolished the death penalty.

The Islamic-rooted government under Erdogan was a strong supporter of the Islamist Morsi after he won the 2012 elections with just under 52 per cent of the vote, hoping he would help restore Turkey's Ottoman-era influence in the region.

However Turkey reacted furiously to the overthrow by Sisi of Morsi, a move supported by Saudi Arabia. Diplomatic relations were severely degraded.

Erdogan has repeatedly attacked Sisi in speeches since. However until the death sentence verdict, there had been tentative signs of a rapprochement as Turkey seeks to improve ties with Saudi Arabia.

An Egyptian court sentenced Morsi to death today for his role in a mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising that ousted former president Hosni Mubarak.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun.
He is not died yet the mufti has to confirm the ruling

Let's just all remember that mubarak got a life sentence and was "proven" not guilty in the retail.
let's also remember the soldiers and officers who were killed during that prison break.
and a fun fact sisi was not the judge
(Egyptains love sisi because of the economic recovery and the projects he is working on , egyptains hate mbs because of the bombs exploding everyday)

Totally agree with you on dealing with Mubarak regime's figures the same way. I wasn't supporting anyone just explaining how much influential the MB really was, according to human rights groups and every Anti-Sisi group they criticize him for jailing about 40 thousand islamist, if you are keeping up with the Egyptian news you'd see that only few of islamists are still making noise in Egypt in Ain Shams ( a neighborhood in a city in a governorate in a country), if 40K islamist is all it takes to crush the MB I don't think they are really considered part of Egyptian population.

Edit:

P.S. : Egypt's population is +90,000,000.
