Modi wants to use solar to bring power to the 400 million Indians without electricity

Well considering that he opened Asia's largest solar plant in Gujarat, I won't be surprised if he and his cabinet plan a massive renewable energy plan. The non-himalayan parts of India are blessed with mighty sunshine and the coastal regions blessed with strong winds.

If solar plants crop up all across India and wind turbines are put in places like Odisha, there will be no shortage of power.

Currently Japan is researching on floor slaps which could convert the energy from people walking over them into electricity to light street lamps on pedestrian crossings. If we can collaborate with the Japanese in this, India will never have power shortage.

But honestly, we need something here in the himalayan terrain too. Hydel power alone just won't cut it in the near future.

Kalpasar Project is also awesome bro

well 400 million is quite a huge figure,Don't you think so..
It is 33% of India's population.
But there is also a few factors to consider.

1. India is geographically vast. Many people live in so remote areas that it becomes prohibitively expensive to connect the grid

The remoteness can be hundreds of kilometers in the desert to marshlands to mountains.

2. Then the people living in these areas are not empowered enough to demand facilities from the Govt.
3. Or when they can, they are so poor that they cannot pay the electricity bills.
4. Electricity initself was so less that the more people get connected to the grid, the lesser each one will have(loadshedding).

The cumulative result of this is that these people are denied the facilities that other Indians enjoy.

However, changes are afoot very fast.
1. By 2019, I believe, there are plans to connect every house
2. We are finally going fast towards zero energy deficit. Many States are already electricity surplus, many more are en route to becoming so.

You are joking right?

There is literally hundreds of gigwatts of Hydel that can be produced from the Himalayan regions.

That may well be true but activist types like Medha Patkar will not allow full utilization of that potential

I know its true. . .but my point is . . if Wb is using 1.25$/day as the base, poverty rate is just below 22%

and if IPC is using 0.50$/day as the base then how come poverty % is not decreasing. it should go below 10 % . .:cheesy::cheesy::cheesy:

Anyhow our reporters don't know shit about journalism . .saale Ganwar bhare hain pure.
Both are same... World bank's bench mark is $1.25 per day in PPP.. In india we can buy products( food or services) worth $1.25 in USA with only $0.5... so both have same value...

I was talking about the future when population is on the boom much more than today.

You must understand the ecological sensitivity of our place. Just because it is rugged scenic mountains doesn't mean we can make a thousand dams. Even if we have the money, we need to conserve nature in such a way that the environment is not harmed too much.

I'll give you a hint; why is it that we don't have heavy manufacturing in the himalayan states? Because we simply cannot afford to have drastic weather changes here.

Hydel is good but only upto a limit.

We need to harness wind and solar power in the future other than just hydel.

Medha Patkar like marxist losers are not the problem.

Himalayan ecology is sensitive my friend. You have to live in one state of that sort to see what I am talking about.

I agree that there has been too much protectionism of ecology and not allowing industries or capacity to build but there's a reason.

Himalayan region is not like your typical plains like UP or Delhi or Bihar or Punjab or Tamil Nadu.

It is different.

Hey I am from Uttarakhand myself (though not living there at present) so I know all about the fragile ecology.

Believe me I am not talking about damming the whole Himalayas but these activist types oppose even legitimate projects

. .
dudes, by 2020 we would already have 20,000 MW of electricity by solar power. But with Modi on board i expect around 30000 MW by 2025
