The Pakistani government should complain, and keep complaining, in international mass media news, about these plans by India. Water shortage war-tactics can with great ease be called 'using poor man's WMD' (Weapons of Mass Destruction).
The goal for the Pakistani government should be to get stiff (firm, heavy) economic sanctions made against India for being such bad neighbors to Pakistan.
Quite frankly this is more easily done in the hallways of official diplomats than it is with online forums. Online forums are not nearly as widely read as the mass media news is..

Mr. Modi hasn't impressed me at all. I've followed plenty of events. It doesn't seem like he goes beyond basic religious and nationalistic stuff much.

I am just using common sense here, does he honestly think that he can block the Water just as simply as he says it? One: there are international treaties in place and second, if he really violates those, then China will do the same to India and will actually divert Indian river's water, as well as Indus's water through underground tunnels to Pakistan. Just to get real, the largest and the fastest infrastructure implementations happen in China.

I hope one fine morning Mr. Modi won't get up and realize that 90% of the Water coming from China is headed to Pakistan. The international treaties much be respected. Otherwise, the world will become a jungle.

BATHINDA – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday once again threatened to cut off Pakistan’s water supply.

Speaking at an inauguration ceremony, Modi who is dubbed a hard liner in India expressed that water belonging to India could not be allowed to enter Pakistan.

‘The fields of our farmers must have adequate water. Water that belongs to India cannot be allowed to go to Pakistan. Government will do everything to give enough water to our farmers’ said PM Modi.

“We formed a task force on Indus water treaty to ensure farmers of Punjab and other states get each drop of water due to them,” he added.



The premier expressed that he was concerned more about farmers than the arithmetic of elections.

Currently, Pakistan and India grab a share of their water under the 1960’s Indus Waters Treaty that remained effective even under hostile environment during wars of 1965 and 1971.

Under the treaty, which was signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President Ayub Khan in Sept 1960, water of six rivers — Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum — are to be shared between the two countries.

However, Indian authorities threatened Pakistan of using water as weapon soon after the relations between the neighbours became frayed after the Uri attack that left 18 soldiers dead.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack but Pakistan categorically gainsaid the allegations in this regard.

The tension simmered once again after India claimed of carrying out a surgical strike inside Pakistan, which Pakistan termed a drama.

Both nuclear-armed neighbours also expelled high commission staffers of each other following the allegations of espionage.

Recently India targetted Passenger bus in Neelum valley that left nine passengers dead. Moreover, three Pakistani soldiers also lost their lives in the attack that irked Pakistan.

Sir, I like to research such interesting topics. Thank you for posting the Indus water treaty. So if India violates the treaty, I guess the following would be a response to this strategy (or lack of a strategy to be honest)?

Check out the Red for rerouting Indus to Pakistan or to the Chinese river system, from where it can be diverted to Pakistan through tunnels. And the other Red and White lines show rerouting other major Indian river/s to a Chinese reservoir, and linking it to the water that China gets downstream? Thanks
