What's new

Modi pushes 'obsolete' Tejas on reluctant military

Indians have got so many Migs, SUs, Mirages that it does NOT make any difference if they have Tejas or not. They already have plate full.

.
So 36 Rafales will be the maximum number that will be inducted into IAF? With upgraded mig 29,mirage 2000 and upto 200 su 30 mki IAF is still a decent air force. I don't know why the indian military planners keep on weeping all the time

Why the surprise? There was an article out recently which said that Su30 MKI was not enough to handle the Pakistan F-16's & that we needed the Rafale to be able to deal with it. Remember that there are some 300 Su MKI's. This is what all military do, whine for new stuff. Someone had to do a reality check & put the foot down.

Difficult Problem - We have to take the baby steps in our pursuit of becoming independent of expensive defense imports.

A functioning and competent defense Industry capable of serving most needs of Indian Armed Forces would also lead to creation of jobs and not only save valuable FX but earn them.

Though the Govt has to balance short term defense needs which can only be met through imports with long term Make in India plans, Some sort of intervention is needed to ween the IAF from the imports and even if Tejas does not meet all of their requirements it is still an improvement over obsolete Mig 21s.

The current iteration of Tejas wouldn't be the stop but the start with improved future versions planned. Expertise gained can be further applied to Indian Aeronautics Industry which is at best struggling.

IN and ISRO have shown we Indians are second to none if we put our minds and energies to a project with full backing and appreciation of all stakeholders, time IAF and IA too join the club and take ownership of their projects instead of leaving it all on DRDO and ADA.

What are the LCA's real specs. It is heavier than intended so some spec shortfalls resulting from that.

LCA in any form should be India's priority, they should start inducting and introduce changes mid production and via back upgrades as it becomes more mature, its primary objective is to replace InAFs aging aircraft and it is better to them in current form. Revising and waiting for a more advanced version will only compounds problems because by the time the newer version comes out InAF might have pointed out further improvements.
LCAs true wieght is 6.5tonnes which is almost 1000KG more than it was designed deu to various counter wieghts and telematarry and testing equipment on board and special fixtures and harnassess and all that plus Tejas has a very extra heavy duty landing gear which it doesnt needs as for its capability tejas is tested on all types of altitude in all kinds of weather and day and night operations

in short : a new programm is launched to cut down all that extra flab off the tejas + give it a new improoved internal avionicks and cockpit layowt with a new AESA based radar and EW suite

And how much time that will take? I think they have over-done with this light class of aircraft and now having problems, what do you say?

Mr. Author of this article ...You must increase knowledge on the fighter aircraft first...How you can compare RAFALE and TEJAS...???...You need to understand why India is working on Tejas....And why Tejas is very important for India...Please do not compare orange and apple..

its almost ready onl;i thing it does not has right now is onboard oxyegn making capacity and mid air refuling probe which are now in process of integration as we speak and FOC might be achieved by the end of this calender year or first quater of 2016

but you are right tejas was designed as a very low cost for point defence /internal air to air policiong role to replace aging mig21s not as a light MRCA but constant goal post changing by IAF have made it like one with is streched to its limits

I second you, they are completely different classes of aircrafts.

LCA Tejas is a bottom-up design approach which is #1 challenging, #2 time-taking and #3 costly. The up-side is that you learn more. Only people with engineering and scientific background can understand that. I think if it can clear FOC, its a big achievement for India.

That is because the IAF is comparing. Saying that they want the Rafale & don't want the Tejas. Standard whining. Won't work with this government.

This is in line with Modi's 'na khaunga na khane dunga' slogan. There's bound to be stiff opposition from the vested interests when you put a stop to their illegal source of income!

.
Current crop of IAF elite needs to run their course for a systemic internal change within the force to happen.

They are still from the old cold-war philosophy/doctrine that Indian products will inherently be inferior and weak and unacceptable.

Hopefully the upcoming generation of these officers and policy makers will be influenced by this current govt (and may its tenure be as long as possible) and both IAF and IA take a unbiased, neutral perspective when it comes to acquiring hardware in future.

Tejas is for quantity Rafael is for quality
Not to mistake above statement with LCA capabilites though. It is as capable as jf 17 if not more. Big difference is we can field 2 LCA's or even 3 LCA's for each jf you put in sky. That is big capability in itself.

Inducting Tejas seems right decision as India have invested huge amounts on it to develop local industry. Also what it will replace Mig-21/23/27, which it can do well as it has advance systems from around the world.

Rafale is overkill if you want to replace above mentioned jets, also India have good numbers of front line jets like MKI, Mig-29,M2Ks so they don't have problem for urgent induction of front line jets specially when 5th gen jet is also coming in future.

Its like a comedy routine

The reality is this, LCA would be scrapped if it wasent for your government forcing your military to induct them

The same goes for Arjunk

Everything else are just excuses by indian fanboys

The plane has major issues snd shortfalls, the indian military realise this now but due to ego the government is forcing them to induct this flying turd
